Via Gay City News: “The Ali Forney Center (AFC), the nation’s largest organization serving LGBTQ homeless youth, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 27 to announce the opening of a new 24-hour drop-in center and headquarters in the same building as GMHC at 307 West 38th Street in Manhattan.

AFC’s new location includes 30,000 square feet of office space on the second floor in addition to a drop-in center that will encompass the entire third floor of the building. Youth between the ages of 16 and 24 will now be able to utilize a broader range of on-site services, including medical and mental healthcare, substance use counseling, career education, meals, and overnight programming, according to AFC. Members will also benefit from the close proximity to GMHC, which is a non-profit providing services to people affected by HIV/AIDS.”

A recent study by Trevor Project found that transgender and nonbinary youth are 2 to 2.5 times more likely to experience depression and attempt su***de compared to their cisgender, LGBTQ peers. For trans youth, having access to gender-affirming care can be life-changing. It fosters self-acceptance, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. It helps alleviate the distress caused by gender dysphoria, and is a crucial component of mental health support for trans youth.

“A California shop owner, community leader, and mother of nine children was killed Friday by a man who objected to her flying a Pride flag outside her clothing store and then shot her.

Laura Ann Carleton (“Lauri”), 66, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel responding to reports of a shooting at her Mag.Pi store in Cedar Glen, a small community about 80 miles east of Los Angeles.”
