Sure, we all have them, to different degrees. 👹

... some are deep, dark, paralyzing demons that prevent us from healing.
.. some are faded ghosts that gently remind us of past failures.
.. some give us nightmares, and ruin our days.

We’ve all had some horror-inducing networking and life experiences. We’ve all faced rejection, failure, criticism, judgment, doubt, and insecurity.

AND ... we all have to learn to let that stuff go! 😳

We have to face our demons and ghosts, process the pain and doubt, and push through our fears ... in order to move forward.

That negative baggage is too damn heavy to schlep into every event, every meeting, every conversation, every relationship.

Those ghosts did not buy a ticket to your industry conference. 👻
Those demons did not earn your seat in the Boardroom. 👹
Those bullies must be banned from your stage. 🧌

Bad experiences with a boss, business partner, boyfriend, girlfriend, bestie, or boring networker? Yup, been there, done that, screamed about 'em.

Then process them, file them under “Life Lessons”, and say "Boo, Buh Bye!" 👋

We can let other people’s bad behavior control our decisions and determine our fate ... OR ... We can use conflicts and challenges to become stronger, smarter, and more resilient. Use them as learning experiences. I also use them as comedy material to educate and entertain.

🎭 Scene: A Typical Networking Event

The Frustrated Networker screams into the void. 🤬

“If I have to hear one more person talk about the weather for 10 minutes, I will cut off my ears. Or their tongue. Or both."

"Oh wait, this isn’t actually a horror movie … it’s just a horrible conversation.”

🧠 Here's my prescription. Think of small talk as the appetizer before the entree.
It’s a way to warm you up, like foreplay for deeper conversation.

• Small talk can be strategic and substantive, and also friendly and fun.
• Small talk can set the stage for a bigger meeting, a pitch, interview, or deal.
• Small talk can help you learn what’s inside people’s brains, hearts, and guts.

🗣️ Bring up topics that interest you, (instead of bringing up your lunch).

Prepare questions in advance, and prepare your own answers to these questions. A few excellent, and eerie, examples:

“How did you get into this field?”
“What’s your favorite part of your job?”
“What type of clients do you operate on?”
“Can you share your best beheading story?”
“I’m drinking a Bloody Mary; what’s your favorite poison?
“Oh, you’re in real estate?! Can you help me find an affordable castle on a wooded hill, in a deserted ghost town?”

🗣️ Talk about Hot Topics:
The speaker, the organization, the venue, industry issues, fun facts about internal organs, networking horrors. Share networking advice from a clever article you read, like this one. Pro tip: Send them the link after the event, as a way to follow up.

❤️‍🔥 Networking is about human connection. This is how simple, stress-free, not boring and not gory, networking can - and should - be.

True or false .... small talk sucks ?! 🙄

TRUE: Small talk can suck, but it doesn't have to.
TRUE: Small talk can, and should be strategic, insightful, and fun.
TRUE: Small talk doesn't come naturally to many people.

Also True: I'm a tiny networking expert, and I'm here to help.
