October is World Mental Health Month. Our mental wellbeing is just as important as our physical one. Take the time to learn about mental health concerns and don't forget to take a day off (or two!) to be kind to yourself and refresh your mind.

October 1 is International Coffee Day, a day for celebrating the bean beverage that makes the world go round. Originally launched in Milan, International Coffee Day is also used to promote fair trade coffee and to raise awareness for the plight of the coffee grower. That is why on this day many businesses decide to give free or discounted cups of coffee, so be on the lookout for some coffee deals near you!

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and support for brave young warriors battling this disease. also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery.

Every third week of June is Learning Disability Week!

People with learning disabilities may need some extra help and care to overcome certain challenges. Here is a timeline of some ways the US government helps these individuals:

1973: a law was passed to prohibit discrimination based on disability
1975: a list of certain learning disabilities were added to the list of disabilities in a bill signed into law, which created the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
1990: The American Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed to protect individuals with disabilities from facing discrimination in finding accommodation, attending school, boarding public transportation, and finding employment
2001: No Child Left Behind Act was signed
2004: An addition was made to IDEA to prevent identifying students with learning disabilities

What’s the most common cancer in the US? Skin cancer, with over 5 million cases diagnosed each year. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays.



With summer around the corner, here are some ways you can avoid exposure to the sun’s UV rays.

Stay in the shade, particularly when the UV rays are strongest from 10am-4pm
Cover your arms and legs
Wear hats to shade your face, head, ears, and neck
Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher

Remember, protection from UV rays is important year round, not just when it’s hot out!
