One week from today, we’ll be on the ground at Sharks International 2026 🦈

Pine Forest Media will be covering the conference for Oceanography—our UN Ocean Decade–endorsed podcast that’s reached listeners in 150+ countries and become one of the top ocean science shows on Apple Podcasts.

We’ll be speaking with scientists, conservationists, and policy experts from around the world to understand the state of shark and ray science today—from biodiversity and fisheries to governance, conservation, and the future of these species in a changing ocean.

This is part of a special multi-episode editorial arc, so if there’s something you’ve always wanted to know about sharks, rays, or ocean science more broadly, now’s the time.

Drop your questions below and we’ll take them with us 🎙️

Every organism leaves a trace behind.
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is genetic material shed into seawater. These tiny fragments that, when collected and analyzed, reveal which species are present and how ecosystems are changing.

This breakthrough technology is reshaping conservation. From a single water sample, scientists can now:

🐋 Detect endangered species
🐠 Track shifting populations
🎣 Inform sustainable fisheries
🌏 Monitor marine protected areas
☀️ Measure climate impacts
💧 Assess water quality

The OceanOmics Project at Minderoo Foundation is turning this science into action and connecting eDNA data with the people and policies that shape the future of our oceans.

This week at New York Climate Week reminded me that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have for climate action. Every conversation, from ocean storytelling to decolonizing climate justice, came back to the same truth: the way we tell stories shapes what we believe is possible.

I heard scientists, farmers, artists, and activists speak about courage, grief, and imagination. About what it means to give the planet a voice. About who gets to tell the story of the future, and who has been left out of it.

Each event felt like a small glimpse of the collective work ahead. Listening, learning, and creating space for more voices to be heard.

As Pine Forest Media grows, I’m thinking a lot about how we can show up next year — to help tell stories that reconnect people to the planet and to each other. 🌎

🔹 Why the UN declared a Decade of Ocean Science
🎯 The goals: from protecting biodiversity to closing knowledge gaps
🧭 The challenges: climate change, deep-sea exploration, equity in research
🪶 The role of Indigenous knowledge and ocean stewardship
📣 How to follow the Decade—and how you can get involved

This isn’t just a science initiative—it’s a global movement built on collaboration, justice, and hope.

🌍🌊 Big news from the deep! 🌊🌍

We’re proud to announce that Oceanography has been officially endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade—a global initiative dedicated to advancing ocean science for sustainable development. 🧪🌱

This endorsement recognizes Oceanography as part of a worldwide movement to transform how we understand, protect, and sustainably use the ocean. We’re honored to be in the company of researchers, educators, and innovators all working toward a healthier, more equitable future for our planet.

Thank you to our listeners and guests for making this possible. And thank you to the for supporting science communication that centers the ocean. 💙

🐋 EPISODE 1 IS OUT NOW 🐋
In our debut episode of Oceanography, we meet the North Atlantic right whale—one of the most endangered whales on Earth—and explore the tech designed to protect it.

Guest Megan Amico, a fisheries biologist at (NOAA), walks us through the smart fishing gear reshaping marine conservation:
🔹 On-demand lobster traps
🔹 Turtle excluder devices
🔹 Real collaboration between scientists & fishermen

This isn’t just about gear. It’s about how unlikely partnerships are leading to real, measurable change—for both wildlife and coastal communities. 🌊⚓
