In places of natural or artificial obstacles to the flow of the river, reservoirs appear (flowing lakes or artificial seas). Limnology (ancient Greek λίμνη - lake, λόγος - teaching) or lake science - a section of hydrology, the science of the physical, chemical and biological aspects of lakes and other fresh water bodies, including reservoirs. In turn, rivers are the subject of one of the largest sections of land hydrology - river hydrology or potamology, which studies the structure of river networks, river flow, river basin morphometry, and so on. As a rule, rivers make their way and flow through zones of least stress and resistance - along tectonic faults.
