George Washington retired from the presidency March 1797 after completing his second term. In doing so, he established one of the most important practices in American democracy: a peaceful transfer of power. His retirement reflected his idea that leaders should step away modestly, and not use the office to accumulate personal power or wealth. His retirement lasted less than three years and he died in December 1799 after a brief infection. Washington’s sudden and unexpected death resulted in a national outpouring of shock and grief.

Who knows how long it will be up?

With this administration meddling with the arts, cutting funding, and summarily firing people (viz. Dr. Hayden, the Librarian of Congress), Someone may very well throw a tantrum and shutter it.
