➡️ Greece to Boost Maritime Education Funding by €90 Million, Targets New Generation of Seafarers

At a ministerial conference on seafarers held in Limassol, Greece announced a major investment aimed at revitalizing its maritime workforce and strengthening the long-term competitiveness of its shipping sector.
The Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Mr. Vasilis Kikilias, revealed that the Greek government will increase funding for maritime education by 25%, allocating an additional €90 million over the next seven years.
Minister Kikilias framed the initiative as a strategic effort to make maritime careers more appealing to younger generations while addressing retention challenges within the profession.

➡️ Tanker HELGA Crosses the Strait of Hormuz Successfully

Iranian and U.S forces alike continue to seize vessels as their blockades continue. However, a second VLCC has made it through the Strait of Hormuz and to Iraq’s southern oil terminals. In fact, AIS data showed the 299,000-dwt VLCC Helga docked off Basrah on Monday.

The Oil tanker sailing under the flag of Comoros, but of unknown ownership, arrived ‌at one of the offshore oil loading terminals in Iraq’s southern Basra port on Friday and was preparing to load 2 million barrels of crude, two port sources disclosed according to Reuters.

“Freedom of Navigation is not Negotiable”: IMO Addresses UN Security Council about the Strait of Hormuz

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has called on States to uphold the principle of freedom of navigation and reject any imposition of tolls, fees or discriminatory transit measures for passage through straits used for international navigation.
Addressing the UN Security Council on the topic of ‘The safety and protection of waterways in the maritime domain, he emphasized:
“The principle of freedom of navigation is not negotiable. Ships must be allowed to trade worldwide unhindered and in accordance with international law.”
Any deviation from these well-established and recognized principles would set a negative precedent and severely undermine the integrity and stability of shipping operations worldwide, he added.

As the International Maritime Organization prepares for the 84th session of its Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84), industry groups and stakeholders are consolidating their positions in anticipation of critical decisions on greenhouse gas regulation.
This week, a broad coalition representing roughly half of the world’s commercial shipping fleet has issued a unified call for greater consensus among governments ahead of a pivotal round of climate negotiations at the IMO.
