Harvey Ross Ball, the inventor of the smiley face, was hired by an insurance company in 1963 to create a morale-boosting icon for its employees. He whipped up a yellow-and-black smiley face with a wide, dimpled grin. He was paid $45 for his 10 minutes of work.

Today, on his 91st birthday, we lost one of the most iconic graphic designers of our time! Thank you Milton Glaser for inspiring us all with your incredible work!

He also created the famous poster of Bob Dylan with psychedelic hair, was a co-founder of New York magazine and produced designs for everything from supermarkets to restaurants to “Mad Men.”
