On this Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor both the kānaka ʻōiwi of Hawaiʻi and the Lenape people of New York, whose rich cultures and deep connections to the land have shaped the communities we serve. 🌊🌆

In Hawaiʻi, the kānaka ʻōiwi embody a profound relationship with the ʻāina (land), safeguarding its vitality through generations of stewardship. In New York City, the Lenape people, the original inhabitants of this land, remind us of the resilience and enduring presence of Indigenous communities, even in urban landscapes.

Today, we celebrate the indigeneity of both the kānaka ʻōiwi and the Lenape, acknowledging their histories and continuing contributions. We stand in gratitude and solidarity, committed to honoring their legacies and supporting their futures. ✊🏽🪶

We have purposefully stayed away from posting anything related to the devastation that permanently changed the face of Lahaina, Maui. While social media has shared the heartache, loss, and life-altering scenes, it has also garnered the power of generosity from across the globe.

The coming weeks will continue to bear stories of unspeakable loss and tragedy, and we will witness beautiful stories of community and aloha. We know full well that the face of Lahaina may have changed, but the heart of this town is strong.

The measure of Hawai‘i’s strength is how we came together in the days after August 8th when the streets of Heaven were too crowded with angels.

Kākoʻo Maui. Mālama Maui. Kōkua Maui. Aloha Maui. Do it all, because we are certain that if the time comes for any other island in need, we will rise to kākoʻo, mālama, kōkua and aloha.

We are happy to support the following organizations:

FAMILY AND FOUNDATION HONORED BY U.S. QUARTER DESIGNATION

HILO, Hawai‘i – The late Edith Kanaka‘ole, venerated Hawaiian cultural icon, kumu hula, composer, chanter, and a key influence in the Hawaiian renaissance of the 1970s was designated today an honoree of the 2023 American Women Quarters™, a program of the United States Mint.

The honor will be shared with four other women trailblazers, former First Lady and first chair of the U.N. Commission on Human Rights Eleanor Roosevelt, first African American and first Native American woman pilot Bessie Coleman, Mexican American journalist Jovita Idár and Maria Tallchief a Native American and America’s first major prima ballerina.

“This is an unbelievable honor for our family, for our body of work at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation in carrying on her legacy and her teachings, for our home and for our people,” said Kanaka‘ole’s granddaughter and Executive Director of the Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation Huihui Kanahele-Mossman, Ph.D.

Kūha‘o‘īmaikalani Zane, Kanaka‘ole’s grandson and president of the board of directors of the foundation established in honor of her life’s work said, “this high recognition reminds us that our work at the foundation continues to be relevant, our research and our practices continue to have meaning and application.”

Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele, Ph.D., a daughter of the late Kanaka‘ole, a cultural resource herself said, “my mother was a ‘pusher’ but she always did it with a smile. She pushed all six of her children, when it was not yet a natural process for Hawaiians, towards Higher Education to earn a degree. When she became an Instructor at the University of Hawaiʻi in Hilo she encouraged Hawaiian students to 1) maintain their stay and earn their degree, 2) know who they were as Hawaiians and elevate the status of the Lāhui.”

In a release today, U.S. Mint Deputy Director Ventris C. Gibson said, “the range of accomplishments and experiences of these extraordinary women speak to the contributions women have always made in the history of our country. I am proud that the Mint continues to connect America through coins by honoring these pioneering women and their groundbreaking contributions to our society.”

About Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation | www.edithkanakaolefoundation.org

The Edith Kanaka‘ole Foundation continues the legacy of Mrs. Edith Kanakaʻole (d. 1979), an indigenous Hawaiian woman recognized by indigenous Hawaiians, the people of Hawaiʻi and the State of Hawaiʻi as the preeminent practitioner of modern Hawaiian culture and language. One part of the legacy of Mrs. Kanakaʻole includes Hālau o Kekuhi, the internationally acclaimed hālau hula (dance school). In 1996, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs deemed the hālau and its teachers Living Hawaiian Treasures in recognition of the depth in native Hawaiian traditional culture that hula requires, such as education in genealogy, use of indigenous plants for making and decorating garments, protocol in the collection of plants, and deep insight into all aspects of Hawaiian language, culture, and history for the proper interpretation of chants and dance.
