What’s Wrong With This Diorama? You Can Read All About It! As a visual practitioner focused on supporting the movement for Equity and social justice, I often think about the impact of visuals in perpetuating oppression and harmful stereotypes. Knowing I have blind spots I invite people for whom I’m creating the visual to tell me if something is misrepresented so I can edit it. In meetings I’ve seen how my “mistakes” have led to valuable dialogue, not only with me but with the rest of participants around the reality and depth of people’s identities and lived experiences. as I read this article, I am appreciative of the work of activists to push Museums to reassess the way things are portrayed when they are only telling one side of the story and either dehumanizing or misrepresenting the other sides of the story. I’m also appreciative of the approach that, in this case, the Museum of Natural History in NYC approached this call, by amending the artwork in a way that invites dialogue vs. taking down a piece or changing it completely, missing the opportunity for people to reflect and reconsider something that otherwise some may have not given much thought.

The American Museum of Natural History corrects a Native American story in full view of visitors, inviting them to “reconsider this scene.”
