We recently walked Monte Vista Chapel in Turlock, California through a rebrand. Monte Vista Chapel is a non-denominational church that was founded over 60 years ago. Our process included creating a new logo, an updated brand style guide, shooting photos and videos for the website, and completely redesigning their website.

For the brand style guide, we included a new mark, colors and typography, discovering their brand promise, brand rationale, brand pillars, brand positioning statement, and tonal words to convey the brand. Working with them has been a wonderful experience. They have a special team in place leading a church that helps people experience Jesus.

This is a question that we get a lot. “Do you guys have some Pollyanna view of the world?” “I know the joy of the Lord is our strength, but life is really hard sometimes.” Especially in 2020.

Joy rooted in post-conventional wisdom can hold grief and joy at the same time.

You are grieving about this thing that happened to you. You loved someone, and you lost them early. You lost your job. Your spouse woke up one morning and said they didn’t love you any more.

It feels like your world collapsed.

Joy rooted in post-conventional wisdom offers this encouragement: it is actually worse than all of that. Much worse.

We are all going to die. You. Me. Them. All of us. It is just a matter of how and when.

The book of Ecclesiastes teaches us it’s all momentary, a passing v***r. Here and, the second you reach out to hold it, gone.

Joy Ethic is about accepting that reality and organizing your life and work around your values. Focusing in on what really matters and letting go of what doesn’t.
You can choose to be bitter, or you can choose to be better. You can choose joy.

When you choose joy, you start to see it everywhere. You live with gratitude. You invest in the relationships more and stuff less. You start listening to your life.

In the words of my priest’s weekly benediction:

Friends, remember that life is short and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of the those who journey with us.

So be swift to love and make haste to be kind and may the blessing of God who made you, who loves you, and who travels with you be with you now and forever.

This is how we approach our work and life. We are always looking for joy and choosing to focus in on it with the time that we have left.
