Residents turned out across Coweta County on Saturday as Citizens for Rural Coweta hosted four pop-up events opposing proposed data center developments.

Attendees reported long lines at multiple locations, including Madras Community Center, where some estimated hundreds of people were waiting by late morning.

The group is now pursuing a petition drive that organizers say could lead to a countywide referendum on data centers.

The proposed referendum would ask voters whether to overturn the county's decision allowing data centers as a special use in unincorporated Coweta County.

"This is democracy in action," said Steve Swope. "Taking control from three men and saying, 'You don't get to make that decision. We do.'"

An important message from Coweta County Schools Transportation:

🚍👀 “You may notice more school buses traveling throughout the county over the next few weeks - and no, school hasn’t started just yet!

Our transportation team is hard at work inspecting roads, checking bus stops, and reviewing routes to help make sure students have a safe and smooth ride for the upcoming school year. 🛑✅

This important process helps us identify any road changes, construction areas, safety concerns, or updates needed before students are back on board.

So if you see a big yellow bus rolling through your neighborhood, give us a wave! 👋 We’re getting ready to safely transport the most important cargo there is - your children. 🧡

Thank you for helping us keep our roads safe for everyone!

Newnan High School teamed up with the Atlanta Braves, Chick-fil-A and other community partners Friday to help families facing food insecurity this summer.

Through the Home Plate Project, Newnan Cougars student-athletes distributed food boxes filled with fresh produce, milk and other items, while Chick-fil-A provided hot meals.

Athletic Director Brandavious Mann said organizers hoped to serve 300 families through the event.

"This is just a way for everyone to get together, partner up and give back and support some families in the community," Mann said.

Passers-by Greenville Street Park, can now see tractors and construction workers busily working behind a fence, while the new cover of the bigger and better stage rises above them.

Newnan City Council members approved renovations of the park along with the construction of Bicentennial Park in October 2025 for a total of more than $3.8 million. The projects are being funded with special purpose local option sales tax proceeds.

Assistant City Manager Hasco Craver said the main issue at the Greenville Street Park was the stage.

“The stage was small and couldn’t accommodate the groups and performing artists we wanted to have,” Craver said.

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help as investigators continue searching for a missing man last seen in Carroll County.

According to the sheriff's office, a missing person report for Malik Polk, 25, was filed on May 19.

Polk was last seen driving in the Whitesburg area. His vehicle was later found abandoned and recovered by law enforcement. Family members told investigators Polk's cell phone has been turned off, and all attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful. They said they have not heard from him since May 17.

Polk's mother, Sharita Hampton, has been sharing updates about her son's disappearance on social media. In a Facebook video, Hampton said Polk was last seen in a heavily wooded area near Shiloh Church Road and Highway 5, where his vehicle was later recovered.

Hampton said family members and friends have organized searches in the area as they continue efforts to locate him.

Anyone who may have seen Polk or has information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Investigator E. Nilson of the Coweta County Sheriff's Office at 770-254-7797 or by email at [email protected]
