How we see libraries
filter 1 = We are pollsters who do research for libraries
filter 2 = We love working in ‘other’ places
they are great places for…
- research and writing
- quiet work
- loud work (book a study room for your Zoom calls)
they offer access to free resources like…
- business databases
- audiobooks (not weird old titles, new releases, the books you want to read)
- magazines (that are on the shelves at your favorite bookstore)
- newspapers (that you would normally have to pay $40 a month to get)
- wireless hotspots
- passes to venues like aquariums and museums
Some library systems even lend home improvement and yard equipment
So what’s your point?
No point, just a reminder that the vast majority of Americans live within walking distance of a library, the only institution that takes on different meaning and offers a different value proposition to people at different stages of their lives.
+ libraries are the only institution where every person, regardless of income, age, or background, is entitled to walk in and use the services for free
+ libraries are the only institution that nearly every American community has maintained continuously for over a century, regardless of politics or economics
+ libraries are the only institution that simultaneously serve as classrooms, offices, cultural venues, and community centers - all without demanding you buy something
+ libraries are the only institution that can be equally relevant to a toddler at story time, a teen doing homework, a professional on a laptop, and a retiree reading the newspaper - in one building
+ libraries are the only institution that consistently experiment with adding services without erasing their original purpose
