S*K Preseason Golfer to Watch ⛳️

Naomi Koontz, a 2027 senior at Newton, returns as one of the state’s top 5A golfers after finishing third at the 2025 state tournament with rounds of 77-76. It marked her third consecutive top-four state finish after placing third in 2024 and fourth in 2023. Koontz owns an impressive career-best 63 (-8) at Turkey Creek and has earned First Team All-State honors all three years of her high school career.

Koontz has also been an AVCTL League champion, 5A regional champion, First Team AVCTL All-League selection, Wichita Eagle All-Metro honoree and Kansas Junior Amateur champion. Newton returns Chaylee Nash and Codi Rose from last year’s state-qualifying team as Koontz looks to help the group make another trip to state.

“I am really excited for my senior year! I love golfing with my teammates every day and it’s going to be so much fun. I’m hoping our team can make it back to state this year!”

Koontz is also a three-year letterwinner in basketball at Newton. Her final high school golf season will be especially meaningful with her dad, Matt Koontz, serving as the team’s head coach. She is committed to UTSA to continue her golf career.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Steve Roberson on his retirement after nearly 32 years of service to the Newton community. His principled leadership and dedication have made Newton a stronger, safer community. Congratulations, Chief!

Of note, Chief Roberson is our last remaining member hired by Newton Ambulance Department before it merged with Newton Fire to become Newton Fire/EMS in 1997. The end of an era.

A new rooftop unit (RTU) is being installed at the Newton High School Ag Shop to provide reliable heating and cooling after the previous unit gave out last month.
