Still looking to work on your garage? Here are some more tips. Many of these are great tips for your basement as well. Here’s a checklist to get you started:
💟 Old paint cans: either organize or toss. If your area is like ours, you will also need to find a place for hazardous waste disposal. Usually you can find this by searching “hazardous waste disposal” and your county name.
💟 Cardboard boxes: Keep just a few you need in one organized stack and recycle the rest. Most communities have a cardboard drop-off bin if you have too many to go to your curb.
💟 Bicycles & sports equipment: If it’s broken, the kids don’t use it, or the kids don’t fit it anymore, toss, donate or sell.
💟 Holiday decorations: Get rid of things you didn't use in the last year. Buy huge bins for cheap, label the box, and go through each one to downsize and simplify.
💟 Tools: If you have a toolbox, organize it. If you don’t have one, get one, or consider a pegboard hanging on the wall to use your vertical space.
💟 Random junk: Electrical cords, plugs, parts, vases, tubs, flower pots…get rid of JUNK, especially anything you haven't used in the last year.
💟 Outdoor and seasonal toys: Go through all the kids toys and snow gear they no longer use and donate, toss or sell.
💟 Use your VERTICAL SPACE! Put up shelves for bins, and hooks or pegboards to hang things. Snowboards, skis, sleds, and similar items can be stored on rubber-covered hooks on the walls.

One of the solutions for storage that many have suggested is a wooden rack. The benefit is the ability to pull out a bin without having to remove bins that are above it.

Now is a great time to clean out the garage so you have space to put away outdoor toys, gardening tools, and more for the winter. Here is how you can get started:
1. Pull everything into the middle of the room or outside of the garage.
2. Sort everything by category. Put all items that do not belong in the space in their own box to put away later.
3. Go through each category and get rid of items you no longer need or want.
4. Start with what shelves, hooks, and bins you already have. Assess what will fit in and on those, making sure to store by category.
5. If it is within budget, purchase items for organization, especially using the wall space to make the most of the entire room.

As we transition seasons again, here is a trick for getting a better handle on how much of our wardrobe we actually wear.
🍁 Did you do the reverse hanger trick with your clothes at the end of last season? If so, remember to get rid of those clothes you didn't wear.
