While cleaning some of our big wood type this week, I flipped over an ampersand and discovered this ornate carving on the back, done long ago in another printing shop. This particular maker mark on this type font is William Page, Greenville, Ct. and was in use between 1859 and 1869. A proof of the block reveals a mailing label or post card from a company in Michigan. The type is 40 line (approximately7”) Condensed Clarendon.

Always something!! The ink train drive motor on our big Korrex proof press decided to die. The press, a marvel of 1960 German engineering, hides the motor and gearbox underneath the frame, with only inches of space to work. My son Steven tackled the job of pulling the motor. His expertise and persistence paid off and the motor is out and now in the possession of a good electric motor shop in Erie. Oh, and yes, Lola helped.

My friend John Horn of the Shooting Star Press printed this giant poster for the June gathering of letterpress printers in Rochester, NY. I believe it was 6 passes through the press using wood type. I did vector pattern drawings of some of the missing wood type letters, and John's son cut the new letters to match.
