As we were hanging out brainstorming ideas for the Fresh Clean Threads campaign, we had a chat with our good friend and 2nd AD Joseph Kresl who gave us the initial idea of a guy rocking a normal t-shirt with absurd confidence at a bar, followed by the allure of those around him. The seeds of this idea eventually became "The Fresh Clean Wingman," and one of our favorite concepts of the four we shot.

When we were approached to pitch a series of broadcast commercials for the apparel brand Fresh Clean Threads, we quickly recognized that other brands in the same space were leveraging the same centerpiece for their advertisements - comedy. We wanted to stand out from this and create our own unique language, so we did our homework and drew inspiration from Edgar Wright's fast-paced storytelling approach to fuel our concepts, specifically "Nerves." Through quick cuts and dynamic camera moves, we aimed to capture and amplify the well known feeling of anticipation before a first date, and the struggle of finding an outfit to make you feel like yourself as well as stand out. Inspire your crew to believe in the vision you have by involving them in the production decks and storyboards, exciting them for the idea. Letting them in on these creative materials boosts their enthusiasm for the project.

If people are doing you a favor by taking on this project, recognize them as contributors and ensure their voices are heard. Create an environment that is memorable and distinct, rather than just another ordinary work day.

Last year, the team at OOPH entered into a spec commercial competition hosted by and saw an opportunity to make something that not only scratched our creative itch, but could be used to promote our business and showcase what we can really do behind the camera. This project became integral to our growth as a creative studio and led to several major opportunities in the months that followed.

Practice, Practice, Practice: Unfortunately, not all creative projects are created equally. There will be some that are labors of love, and others that keep a roof over your head. If long-form campaigns are your dream, it's important to constantly practice making them so when the opportunity does arrive one day (and it will), you'll be ready to make it count.

Don't Wait To Prove Yourself: A Spec Campaign is a good way to SHOW you can work in the industry at a high level as opposed to just waiting for an opportunity to prove yourself. This will put you ahead of the competition faster, and garner the attention of brands you want to work for.

They're Highly Marketable: A good Spec Campaign can reach a lot of eyes online very quickly, and also change the perception of your production company.
