The idea for John Mayer‘s foundation was planted after an unexpected moment.
On July 22, the Grammy winner was honored with the Philanthropist of the Year Award for his dedication to the Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health at The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2026 Social Impact Summit in Los Angeles.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the event, Mayer recalled the moment that inspired him to found Heart and Armor.
“I visited Camp Lejeune with a friend of mine who was there on official business,” he said. “And so I met wounded veterans without knowing I would. And they met me without knowing they would. There were no cameras. There was no celebrity run of show. And we just talked to each other.”
“It caught me off guard,” the “Gravity” singer, 48, continued. “I wasn’t prepared, and their stories really changed my life. I knew that that was gonna be my thing for the rest of my life.”
