It is such an honor for us to headline multi-talented artist and activist Venus DeMars and her band Venus DeMars & All The Pretty Horses on our Pride Party bill at the Underground Music Venue this coming Thursday, June 25.
Operating strong since the early 90’s, Venus de Mars is especially notable as one of the first openly transgender people in the DIY punk scene, a venture that’s splendidly chronicled in the 2003 documentary directed by Emily Goldberg, showcasing her journey through love and gender, and capturing divergent reactions to transgenderism at the close of the 20th century. Let us all remember that transgenderism was considered a mental illness back then and that the state of medicine was not as researched, meaning, at times, lethal... On top of not being covered by insurance.
Her band, All The Pretty Horses, is a gorgeous quartet where Venus has free rein on her activist punk mold, embraces Bowie’s glam and playfulness, and makes good use of shock rock show skills.
You’re in for a treat! These are seasoned touring animals who have owned a pristine repute not only in the Twin Cities but worldwide. Venus’s social and political activism is nothing new, and her involvement in the latest events of Minneapolis is part of a longer epic journey of protest, resistance, and resilience, which marks her entire life and career.
