What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about enhancing a website or its content to boost its presence and position on search engine rankings.

Imagine a library where books are neatly sorted and labeled to help patrons find exactly what they're looking for. SEO works in a similar way, organizing and refining your website's content so search engines like Google can easily understand and suggest it to people searching for related topics.

SEO isn't just one task, it covers a broad spectrum including:

Keyword Optimization: This involves pinpointing relevant keywords that match what people are searching for and weaving them into your website's content, helping search engines grasp the subject matter and relevance of your site.

On-Page Optimization: This aspect focuses on refining elements within your web pages — think titles, headings, meta tags, and URLs — to not only make them more search engine friendly but also more intuitive for users.

Content Quality: The heart of your site is its content. Crafting high-quality, engaging, and unique content that speaks directly to your audience's needs and interests can draw in visitors, encourage them to stick around, and even share your site with others.

Link Building: This involves getting high-quality links from other reputable sites pointing back to yours. These backlinks are like digital thumbs-ups, signaling to search engines that your site is a reliable and authoritative source.

User Experience: A seamless user experience is crucial. Ensuring your site is easy to navigate, loads swiftly, and is accessible on mobile devices can significantly enhance the likelihood of visitors engaging with your content and staying longer on your site.

SEO isn't a one-and-done deal; it's a continuous effort. Search engines regularly tweak their algorithms, and user behaviors shift, so it's essential to keep tabs on your SEO strategy, analyze its performance, and make necessary adjustments.

The ultimate aim of SEO is to not only bump up your site's organic search visibility and pull in more targeted traffic but also to bolster your site's credibility and foster better user engagement. By adopting effective SEO practices, you're essentially ensuring your website is finely tuned to meet the needs of both search engines and your potential visitors.

What does Accessibility mean to you?

Accessibility, in simple terms, refers to the design and implementation of products, services, or environments that are usable and accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities or special needs. It ensures that people with diverse abilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with information, technology, physical spaces, and more.

Accessibility is about removing barriers and providing inclusive experiences for all individuals, regardless of their physical, sensory, or cognitive abilities. It involves considering different needs and disabilities, such as visual impairments, hearing impairments, motor disabilities, cognitive impairments, and more.

Take a website, for example. For someone with a visual impairment, an accessible site would have text descriptions for images, clear structure, and support for screen readers. It's all about breaking down barriers and giving everyone a fair chance.

When we design with accessibility in mind, we're not just ticking a box. We're opening up our world to everyone, fostering equality and inclusion. It's about reaching wider audiences and creating better experiences for all.

Let's talk about 301 redirects. What are they and how do they play a role in SEO?

301 Redirects are a crucial tool in the digital world. Imagin you just moved to a new home and you need to ensure all your mail gets redirected to your new address. That's essentially what a 301 redirect does for your website.

For exmaple, your website has a page with a URL like “example(dot)com/old-page”, and you decide to change it to “example(dot)com/new-page”. By implementing a 301 redirect, you automatically guide anyone trying to visit the old page straight to the new one.

The benefits of a 301 redirect are twofold. Firstly, it prevents visitors from running into a frustrating “Page Not Found” error if they've bookmarked or followed an old link. Secondly, it's great for SEO. The redirect transfers the search ranking power of your old URL to the new one, ensuring search engines like Google recognize and index the change.

301 redirects are particularly useful during website redesigns, content reorganization, or if you're updating URLs for any reason. They're set up at the server level, and can often be managed through your server's configurations or via plugins, depending on your website's platform.

When setting up a 301 redirect, it's important to direct it to the most appropriate new URL. This ensures a smooth transition for your users and maintains your website's integrity in the eyes of search engines.

What is a subdomain?

A subdomain is an additional part of your main domain name, distinct and separate from the main domain. It helps in structuring and navigating the different sections of your website.

You have the flexibility to create multiple subdomains or 'child' domains under your main domain. Essentially, a subdomain is a prefix added to the front of a website's domain name, allowing for the segregation and organization of content for specific functions, like a blog or an e-commerce section.

For instance, consider the URL shop.mywebsite.com. Here, 'shop' is the subdomain, 'mywebsite' is the main domain, and '.com' is the top-level domain (TLD). You can choose any text for your subdomain, and it's advisable to keep it simple for easy recall.

A domain name typically comprises two elements: the top-level domain (TLD), which is the suffix like .com or .org, and the second-level domain (SLD), which is the unique part of the domain, often reflecting a company or brand name. For example, in google.com, 'com' is the TLD and 'google' is the SLD.

The subdomain appears before the SLD in a URL. The most common subdomain is 'www', which stands for World Wide Web. This subdomain usually hosts the homepage and key pages of a website.

What is an A-Record in the DNS Settings?

An A Record is a DNS record that links a domain name to the version 4 IP address of the hosting computer. It is the A Record that assigns a domain name to the IP address of a device connected to the internet. The 'A' in A Record stands for 'Address.'

When you type an address to access a website, send an email, or connect to services like Twitter or Facebook, you're entering a domain name, which is a series of words separated by dots. For instance, typing www.dnsimple.com takes you to the DNSimple website.

On our name server, the A Record points to the IP address 208.93.64.253. This means that when you request www.dnsimple.com through your browser, it directs your request to the server located at that IP address.

A Records have various uses, including setting up redundancy and backup options by using multiple A Records for the same domain. Several domain names can lead to the same IP address, with each domain having its own A Record. The specifications for DNS A Records are outlined in RFC 1035.

Yesterday we covered domain names. Now if we dive deeper we have DNS.

The Domain Name System (DNS) functions as the internet's equivalent of a phone book. Its primary role is to match domain names, like 'google.com' or 'nytimes.com,' with their corresponding IP addresses when users enter these names into web browsers.

This process enables browsers to connect with the originating servers or CDN edge servers, facilitating the retrieval of website content. Essentially, DNS servers are specialized systems designed to handle these DNS queries.

In essence, the DNS is a vast database that pairs domain names with IP addresses, aiding web browsers in identifying the correct IP address for a given hostname URL.

For instance, when we visit websites such as cdnetworks.com, wired.com, or nytimes.com, we typically type the domain name into our browser. But for a browser to fetch and display the website's content, it must know the precise IP address.

This is where the DNS steps in, translating human-friendly domain names into IP addresses, thereby directing the browser to the appropriate server to obtain the necessary website resources.

Everyone knows a website's URL Address like Google or your favorite online shop but what exactly is a domain name?

A domain name serves as your website's easily recognizable and memorable identity, which corresponds to a numerical IP (Internet Protocol) address used by computers.

Essentially, it's the simple text that users enter into a web browser to visit a specific website. Take, for instance, 'google.com,' which is the domain name for Google. While every website has an actual numerical address (like 42.21.244.32), these IP addresses are complex and challenging for humans to remember.

Therefore, the Domain Name System (DNS) was developed to allow the use of user-friendly domain names. This system enables users to input these familiar domain names to access websites, rather than having to remember and enter long sequences of numbers.

Domain names can consist of various combinations of letters and numbers and may include different extensions such as .com, .net, and more, offering a simpler way to navigate the internet.

Satterfield Aerospace's old website was using an outdated design that was not converting effectively or giving them a professional appearance.

Graphic Match got in touch with them in order to redesign their website with a modern design. SS Numerical required a simple website to highlight each service and a gallery page to display the goods they produce for major airline companies.

Satterfield Aerospace now has a more polished appearance, and they can always direct potential customers to the website while making a sales pitch.

On each page of the website's product description pages, there is a gallery and a call to action button.

A button on the website's mobile version enables users to easily call SS numerical without manually entering the phone number.

Desiging a website for a manufacturer was a fun project and looking forward to future updates.

SS Numerical is located in Northridge, CA
