Sewickley Tavern showcases local history with works by 3 artists
Visitors to the Sewickley Tavern will find more than a hearty meal and a bracing beverage. From the minute they walk in the door of the recently opened upscale eatery, they’ll be surrounded by the work of three local artists.

“When architect Nathan St.Germain first met with owner Courtney Yates about her vision for a local tavern, they agreed on one thing: that the art they would choose for the new restaurant would be just as important as the building design and the menu,” according to a release.

Yates and St.Germain, founder and principal of Studio St.Germain, decided to create a modern take on a traditional tavern, including artwork commissioned from local artists that featured contemporary reflections on the history of Sewickley.

The pair reached out to Mark Rengers, owner of Sewickley Gallery & Frame Shop, who recommended three diverse artists whose work he felt would complement the project.

The height of 1980s fashion, see how this Melbourne home got its groove back

Designed by renowned Australian architect Peter McIntyre, this visually arresting house, with its central glass atrium, was the hottest property in Melbourne when it was first built. In fact, it was at one of the many lavish pool parties held here in the 1980s that, as a teenager, its now owner first experienced its charms.

‘She remembered how the place made her feel. That sense of generosity and freedom of space,’ explains Mardi Doherty, director of Doherty Design Studio, who, with designer Niv Kelkar, was tasked with ‘bringing the disco back’ to this home.

A ride on the assembly line with the world’s most famous chalk
The bright-white sticks drop one by one into the whir and clatter of a weatherworn piece of machinery, where they are stamped with the most celebrated name in chalk: Hagoromo.

The early stages of the process look a lot like food production. The ingredients in what the company’s owner calls a “recipe” are dumped into a mixer originally designed for bread dough, and what comes out is fed into a kneader originally intended to make udon noodles.

Chef fills his U. City home with eclectic art, cozy spaces
Although Bernie Lee has no formal education in design, his intuitive understanding of space and proportion, of repetition, rhythm, pattern, color and texture shines in his designs for the interiors of his restaurants, the now-shuttered Hiro’s Asian Kitchen downtown, and at his latest establishment, Akar, in Clayton.

This talented chef also delights patrons’ palates, but his interiors, lush yet nuanced, and his affable hospitality keep guests coming back for more than just food from Bernie Lee.

Design, creativity and art have been touchstones for the Malaysian-born Lee his entire life. “When I was a kid I loved design, but I grew up in a very traditional family. My dad said, ‘You can’t make a living at design.’ In traditional families, all the big jobs — doctor, lawyer, accountant — that’s your choices.

“When I moved to America for my education, I started buying interior design magazines. I adore and admire others’ work, so the magazines were a start. Now I’m lucky enough to know quite a few interior designers. When I hang out with them, I pick up things and learn from them,” he says.

Rachel Maddow thought COVID-19 ‘might kill’ partner Susan Mikula
Rachel Maddow revealed her longtime partner Susan Mikula got so sick with COVID-19, they thought “it might kill her.”

The MSNBC anchor got personal Thursday night during a live broadcast from her home, calling Mikula, 62, the “center of my universe” and recalling the impact of Mikula’s positive coronavirus diagnosis two weeks ago.

“Susan has been sick with COVID these past couple of weeks and at one point we really thought there was a possibility that it might kill her, and that’s why I’ve been away,” Maddow said, explaining her recent absence from TV.

Maddow, 47, said she’s been testing negative for the bug but has been in quarantine.

“She’s gotten sicker and sicker, while I tried to care for her while still staying physically apart from her,” Maddow said of her partner, an artist and photographer, of 21 years. “And the bottom line is that she’s going to be fine, she is recovering, she’s still sick but she’s going to be OK.”

The journalist then issued a desperate plea to Americans to take the disease seriously this holiday season.

“Whatever you have calculated into your life as acceptable risk, as inevitable risk, something you’re willing to go through in terms of this virus because statistically
probably it’ll be fine for you and your loved ones, I’m just here to tell you to recalibrate that,” she said.

“Frankly, the country needs you to recalibrate that because broadly speaking, there’s no room for you in the hospital anymore.”

Photographer Documents Everything a Soldier Had to Carry From the Year 1066 to Modern Day
London-based photographer Thom Atkinson fastidiously documents "people, objects and places," according to his bio. His work "is characterised by a gentle and observational approach, a natural and honest quality, and a care for the craft of picture making."

Atkinson's "Missing Buildings" is a photo book documenting the titular subjects in London, all removed by the Blitz during World War II. Also on the subject of war, and brilliantly told through "everyday carry"-like photographs, is his "Inventory" series. This carefully documents everything the soldiers of a particular conflict, place and time had to carry with them

Angelina Jolie to direct biopic of photographer Don McCullin starring Tom Hardy.
Angelina Jolie is to direct a biopic of photojournalist Don McCullin, starring Tom Hardy.

The film, which is being adapted by ’71 screenwriter Gregory Burke from McCullin’s autobiography, Unreasonable Behaviour.

McCullin, 85, is one of the most celebrated photographers of war, conflict and poverty in recent times. Born in London, he worked as a photographer’s assistant during the Suez crisis before selling his first photo – of a gang in north London – to the Observer in 1959.

Between 1966 and 1984, he worked as an overseas correspondent for the Sunday Times Magazine, where his coverage of crises in Vietnam and Northern Ireland won him especial acclaim.
“I am humbled to have a chance to bring Don McCullin’s life to film,” said Jolie. “I was drawn to his unique combination of fearlessness and humanity – his absolute commitment to witnessing the truth of war, and his empathy and respect for those who suffer its consequences. We hope to make a film that is as uncompromising as Don’s photography, about the extraordinary people and events he witnessed, and the rise and fall of a unique era in journalism.”
