Ryan was on a vacation in Brazil when he met Marcio, who is from Sao Paulo. It was pretty much love at first sight. Marcio moved to California a few months later and last May they were married at City Hall in San Francisco! They were too excited in May to think of a party, but later realized they wanted a party to share their love with friends and family. At Wed Creative we took the theme of “Bridges” as a metaphor for their love, using the famed Golden Gate Bridge and the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Bridge from Marcio’s home town and created an invitation that linked the two bridges and cities the same way that marriage has linked Marcio and Ryan.

San Francisco welcomes spring each year with a very popular weeklong event, in which gifted floral designers bring their imaginative interpretations to works in the de Young’s permanent collections. This year, one of those gifted designers is Svenja Brotz of Chestnut & Vine Floral Design, who is also a wedding floral designer nonpareil!

In the hands of Svenja, the dead swan in the Alexander Pope painting, “The Wild Swan”, flies again. “I decided to create a rising phoenix,” she says. To do it, she worked with a metalsmith to create an avian form. To that she added roughly 550 leaves (mostly eucalyptus) and 300 craspedia to bring the bird to life. It was a painstaking process, and on Monday morning, moments after affixing the last leaf, she was clearly glad to have the swan leave the nest: “I’m very, very glad to be done,” she said.
