Nationally, onshore drilling activity across major U.S. basins showed limited movement during the first week of January. The rig count in the US currently stands at 546. Oil prices are forecasted to continue to decline through the end of Q1 2025, and the rig count is expected to follow.

As of the first week of January 2026, Oklahoma had 42 rigs operating, unchanged from the previous week.

Major play counts:

Cana Woodford — 17 rigs
Granite Wash — 15 rigs
Ardmore Woodford — 4 rigs
Arkoma Woodford — 2 rigs
Mississippian — 1 rig
Other Plays: 4 rigs

Hopefully, these numbers will start growing at some point.

(Maybe after the U.S. rebuilds Venezuela's oil industry and adds another million bpd to global markets!)

Chief Oil and Gas is the next independent looking to cash-out while prices are high, and before the next economic catastrophe hits the oilfield.
