“It wasn’t the water He came for… it was me.” While you won’t find that exact quote in scripture, it is one of the underlying points in John 4:1-42, the story of the Woman at the Well. There are a few things I’d like to point out about this story but I’ll just share 1 here, the rest will be in the comments below if you’d like to read!
1. Jesus waited for the woman
In verses 5-8 we learn that Jesus was traveling and was tired, so He stoped to rest at a well. His disciples left to go into the city to buy food, leaving Him alone at the well. This was not by chance, this was an intentional act on Jesus’ part- He wasn’t just resting- He was waiting. Typically, most women would come to the well early in the morning, before it was too hot, to draw their water. They would often come in groups and visit while doing this. It was midday at the time Jesus was resting at the well yet a woman, all alone, came to the well. It was this woman that Jesus asked to give Him a drink. A woman who we later learn in verses 16-18 was a promiscuous woman. Jesus knew she had already had 5 husbands and the man she lived with currently was not her husband. Yet He was there, waiting for her, specifically her. Jesus was waiting there to give her something that would change her life forever.
Jesus is waiting for you to show up at the well. Your jar is empty, you are in need. He is the source of Living Water. He is calling you to fill your jar with Himself! He already knows your past sins, your current sins, and even your future ones. Yet He still waits for you. Will you show up at the well? If you need someone to talk to about what this might look like, or just someone to pray with, please reach out to us. We’d love to talk with you and pray with you!
