One unexpected thing that’s come from this year so far?
I’ve picked up two consulting gigs working with in-house designers at companies I either currently work with, or have worked with in the past. And honestly? It’s taught me a lot.
It’s made me look closely at my own process. Am I doing something because it’s the best way, or just the way I’ve always done it to get work out the door?
It’s also made me realize how much I naturally operate as an art director and creative partner. I make decisions on layout, pacing, hierarchy, and overall visual direction instinctively at this point. I’ve done it so long, I forgot that part doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
I’m also almost entirely self-taught. One college design class… and the rest came from years of experimenting in Adobe before YouTube tutorials were even a thing. A lot of what I do is instinct and experience. I just know when something works.
And maybe the biggest takeaway?
Creative work needs collaboration. Having someone to bounce ideas off of, challenge a direction, or simply confirm you’re on the right track is invaluable.
If your in-house team needs another creative brain in the room, whether for design support, creative direction, or consulting, let’s talk.
