"ily," created and quilted by Amber Pfaff of Onalaska, Wisconsin, entered in the 2025 Quilt Contest, Wall Quilts, Machine Quilted - Pieced category. Design/pattern source: Lover of Life Designs, Etsy.

Artist statement: I love to challenge myself so I took on a simple pattern of a hand signing "I Love You" and turned it into a statement for disabled, q***r, racial and ethnic communities. I hope to inspire the younger generations, showing there is more to quilts than floral patterned squares and triangles.

Getting professional looking seams without industrial manufacturing machines is difficult, but not impossible on your domestic machines. You just need a double needle!

This is the most personal piece I have ever made. I’m 5 months post op from my prophylactic (preventative) mastectomy. Some days are good, and some are really, really tough. There are so many layers to this piece. Quilted into the background are all the nasty words that go through my head, like ugly and gross. On top of those are the nice things people say to me, but they are rough cut and missing pieces because I just don’t feel like they apply to me. My body is based off a photo of myself and is spot on for how I look in real life. It’s had looking in the mirror most days, but I at least accepted that this is what I look like now.

My Breast Cancer tribute art piece is really coming along! Only a few more things to do before she gets put up at Sparta Butterfest Quilt Show.

I’ll be honest, it could have gone better. I decided to do a nice quilt drop for once but the yucky Wisconsin spring weather had other ideas.
