What Is Oyster Shell?

If you raise laying hens, you've probably heard of oyster shell — but what exactly is it, and why is it important?

Oyster shell is a natural source of calcium that helps hens produce strong, healthy eggshells.

While layer feed contains calcium, laying hens often benefit from having free-choice oyster shell available so they can consume extra calcium when their bodies need it most.

Why is calcium important?

• Supports strong eggshell formation
• Helps reduce thin or soft-shelled eggs
• Supports bone health in laying hens
• Provides a slow-release source of calcium throughout the day and overnight

A laying hen uses a surprising amount of calcium every time she produces an egg. If she doesn't get enough from her diet, her body may pull calcium from her bones to make up the difference.

Tip: Offer oyster shell in a separate feeder rather than mixing it into feed. This allows each hen to consume the amount she needs.

Not sure if your flock is getting enough calcium? Stop by your local CCWG branch and we'll help you find the right products for your birds.

What Is a Feed Tag and How Do You Read One?

Every bag of feed comes with a feed tag, but do you know what all those numbers actually mean?

A feed tag provides important information about what's in the feed and how it should be fed.

Here's a quick breakdown:

• Crude Protein - Supports growth, muscle development, milk production, and overall performance.

• Crude Fat - A concentrated source of energy that helps maintain body condition.

• Crude Fibre - Important for digestive health and proper gut function.

• Calcium & Phosphorus - Essential minerals that support strong bones, growth, and overall health.

• Ingredients - Lists the ingredients used to formulate the feed.

• Feeding Directions - Helps ensure the feed is used safely and effectively.

Remember: A higher number doesn't always mean a better feed. The best feed is the one that matches your animal's age, species, workload, and nutritional needs.

Not sure what feed is right for your animals? Stop by your local CCWG location and our team can help you understand feed tags and choose the right nutrition program.

Spring is the perfect time to give your garden a strong start.

Before planting season gets underway, take a few minutes to prepare your soil for success:

Your Garden Soil Prep Checklist:
• Remove old plant debris
• Loosen compacted soil
• Add nutrients and organic matter
• Check drainage
• Plan your garden beds and rows
• Work in wool pellets as part of your soil preparation

Did you know? Wool pellets are made from natural sheep wool and can help improve soil structure, retain moisture, and slowly release nutrients as they break down. They're a simple and sustainable way to support healthier gardens, raised beds, flower beds, and containers.

From sheep wool to garden pellets, it's a natural cycle that puts Canadian wool to work in your garden.

Visit your local CCWG location or shop online at www.ccwg.ca to learn more about wool pellets and other gardening products.
