The article below is a former press release written about the founders of episode49, Kurt Schaffer and Ken Smith. The article refers to a time, not to long ago, where Kurt and Ken made a well respected contribution to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga by engaging with students and answering entrepreneurial related questions at the Clarence E Harris Entrepreneurial forum. Its opportunities like this that help to match true professional expertise with young and eager questions about the very complex world of entrepreneurship.

-- Chattanooga, TN, Friday, November 04, 2005:
episode49 founders Ken Smith and Kurt Schaffer were the panelists at the 10th Annual Clarence E. Harris Entrepreneurial Forum at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga College of Business. The goal of the Forum is to provide an exchange between students, faculty, and entrepreneurs regarding the entrepreneurial process. The two hour session, attended by over 200 students, faculty and alumni covered ‘Pitfalls in Entrepreneurial Startups- How to Avoid Them’”.

“Attending to the relationship with each client at every step of the experience makes all the difference. We’re hoping to influence these students and faculty to do this since we’ve heard from our customers that few firms genuinely practice this fundamental", said Ken Smith, managing partner and chief strategist, “We wanted to share the importance of paying attention to what is important to our customers – knowing how their businesses work".

In order to understand the context of the insights, many students inquired about episode49’s business of serving the development needs of consumer services, political action, not for profit, and broadcasting and media firms.

“Like many technical firms, we could have easily become wrapped up in the technology and forget about the customer", said Kurt Schaffer, managing partner and chief architect, "We decided to build our processes around the customer right from the beginning. The result is that you become a trusted advisor. For our customers, they have us help them plan for their future digital development needs. We wanted this approach to relationships to be clearly understood".

"I'm not sure people realize what a contribution Ken and Kurt made to the university today by participating in this. You can't measure the depth of learning, the motivation, and the unique satisfaction that students get from hearing two incredibly smart, successful entrepreneurs tell their war stories....heck, I loved it...imagine what it does for a 21 year old with no experience?" said Dr. Diane Halstead, Professor of Entrepreneurship and moderator for the session.

The session was videotaped for use in future training.

On July the 4th, 1776 the United States of America declared independence from Great Britain. Since that glorious day we have seen 237 years, filled with freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. If it weren't for our country's patriotism we would never have been able to free our selves from external control. We should be ever so grateful to live in such a wonderful country that lives to defend its freedom every day. Happy 4th!

Web maintenance :

How important is it to mantain your website? It's absolutely imperative. Imagine a young boy at the age of 18 who saved up for two years to buy a car much needed to assist his transportation efforts. After spending all that time and effort saving up for a vehicle you would hope that he would maintain it regularly with oil, gas, coolant etc. However this particular young man neglected his vehicle and drove it for several thousand miles without keeping up with its required maintenance. The car went from excellent condition to complete engine and transmission failure one year after his purchase, strictly due to a lack of care. Being that the car had no warranty he was forced to sell the car for parts and he soon found himself waking from point A to point B all over again. This example is very much like web design. Web sites are only as effective as you allow them to be and the only way to increase effectiveness is to maintain and adjust it accordingly using certain metrics such as Google Analytics. Google Analytics is an extremely powerful tool used by most web designers to analyze areas in the website that need to be restructured. This is how designers and site owners are able to tell where the predominant source of traffic is on their website and what characteristics of that particular area help to increase effectiveness. This is just one of the many ways that Google Analytics can be used to leverage yourself above the competition. Don't be that 18 year old who neglected his car. Analyze and maintain your site as often as possible so that you can gain the best results from having an online presence.
