**BRITISH COLUMBIA CASE RAISES CONCERNS OVER MIGRANT WORKER EXPLOITATION**

A troubling case in **British Columbia** is raising fresh concern over the exploitation of migrant workers in Canada.

Investigators say the case has exposed alleged illegal recruitment practices involving foreign workers, bringing attention to labour rights, worker protection, and immigration-related abuse.

Worker advocates have long warned that some migrants are vulnerable to excessive recruitment fees, misleading job promises, unsafe working conditions, wage abuse, and threats connected to their immigration or employment status.

The case is renewing calls for stronger enforcement, greater employer accountability, and tougher action against individuals or organizations that profit from exploiting newcomers.

Canada relies heavily on migrant workers in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, hospitality, transportation, and healthcare. That makes fair treatment, legal protection, and proper oversight increasingly important.

For newcomers, this is also a reminder to understand your employment rights, keep copies of contracts and pay records, and report suspected abuse to the proper authorities.

**Question:** Do you think Canada is doing enough to protect migrant workers from exploitation?

INDIAN RESTAURANT OWNER SPARKS DEBATE OVER HIRING NON-INDIAN STAFF

Rashmi Bhat, the Indian-American owner of **7 Monk’s Cafe** in New Braunfels, Texas, has sparked discussion online after explaining why she does not specifically recruit Indian employees for her Indian restaurant.

In a viral Instagram video, Bhat said many customers assume staff at ethnic restaurants must come from the same cultural background as the cuisine. However, she said her hiring approach has always focused on dependability, work ethic, and willingness to learn — not ethnicity.

Since opening in 2019, the restaurant has employed local residents, including high school and college students, single mothers, retirees, and others from the community.

Bhat said some employees had never tried Indian food before working there, but later learned enough to confidently explain dishes and make recommendations to customers.

The video has sparked debate. Some praised the inclusive hiring approach, while others argued that Indian restaurants should hire Indian staff, especially in kitchen roles, to preserve authenticity.

What do you think — should ethnic restaurants prioritize cultural background, or should skill and commitment matter more?
