"The assembly came amid broader conversations about AI at PPS. Educational institutions nationwide are reckoning with the digital, philosophical, and ethical divides around machine learning technology. Some see it as essential to equip students with the skills to be competitive in a workforce likely to be dominated by AI. Others aren’t convinced it belongs in K-12 settings.

District leaders have spent the last few months working to develop rules and recommendations about incorporating AI in the classroom. In a draft guidebook the district released in April, PPS laid out its “AI vision,” stating a goal to “leverage AI as a transformative, ethical, and human-centered tool to accelerate student achievement, disrupt systemic inequities, and prepare every graduate for an AI-powered future.”"

“There is a fear in your generation that the future has already been written, that the machines are coming, that the jobs are evaporating, that the climate is breaking, that politics are fractured, and that you are inheriting a mess that you did not create.”

He acknowledged that their fears are “rational” and encouraged them to adapt and to shape how it will be used in the future – rather than for that shape them.

“The question is not whether AI will shape the world. It will,” Schmidt said. “The question is whether you will have shaped artificial intelligence.”

The student body’s response to Schmidt’s remarks comes days after students graduating from the University of Central Florida booed Gloria Caulfield, a real estate executive, when she spoke of “the rise of artificial intelligence is the next Industrial Revolution” – and about “living in a time of profound change...”

A paper published in March in Trends in Cognitive Sciences found that large language models are systematically homogenizing human expression and thought across three dimensions — language, perspective and reasoning — and students and educators say they are seeing the effects of that trend in their classrooms.

And that makes a lot of students sound the same."

Local defense attorneys helped cover a hotel room and food on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and a local non-profit, the F5 Project, was able to help her return to Tennessee...While jailed and unable to pay bills, Lipps lost her home, her car and her dog...She also told WDAY News no one from the Fargo police department had apologized. This is far from the first case of an AI error flagging the wrong suspect. In October, an AI system apparently mistook a Baltimore high school student’s bag of Doritos for a firearm and called local police to tell them the pupil was armed."

In other words, access to AI may soon matter as much as access to a fat salary and juicy equity awards. As a coder in the AI era, if you don't have access to massive compute, you might end up producing far less software than your colleagues, threatening your career prospects."

Rather than a ‘rising tide lifting all boats,’ a higher level of corporate BS in an organization acts more like a clogged toilet of inefficiency.”
