"I'm going to have to let you go. You're just taking this job too seriously."

Yep. I was fired from a job in my 20s for caring too much. (Did I mention it was a small business with a team of 5?)

I spent most of my life putting so much pressure on myself that I couldn't just...be. I wasn't just an employee, I had to be the best/fastest/friendliest and if not, well I was a failure.

The biggest lesson I've learned in creating multiple businesses is how vital it is to release the pressure. Trust that you've done hard s**t before and you can most certainly do it again.

I learned a lot about myself for "caring too much." It's not a flaw. It's not a deficit. It's my super power.

I was recently asked how to create a memorable on-brand experience for buyers coming in from out of town. We agreed she could go way beyond a local newspaper and map and infuse her personality, showcase local hot spots, and get her clients excited about a new community.

Here are some things we came up with so her clients keep her top-of-mind and fall in love with their new city:

❤️ Ask local pubs, boutiques, or cafes to donate a gift card so newbies to the area can really immerse themselves in the neighborhood. You can thank them with a tag and shout out on social media which is a win-win for everyone.
❤️ Create a fun scavenger hunt or walking map of the downtown or city center with popular landmarks, eateries, and historical facts. You can add your favorites, quirky statistics or even some folklore about haunted buildings or underground tours.
❤️ Create an efficient, detailed guide of the area. Relocation buyers are generally quick decision-makers and having a helpful at-a-glance understanding of local schools, neighborhoods, and shopping can help tremendously.
❤️ Build a “10 things you’ll love about (CITY)” basket or deck of cards with places you love, annual events, resources, and much more. Something portable and handy to pull out and explore once they’re settled
❤️ Partner with local vendors and create a “coupon book” for services your new buyers will need at the new place. Home cleaning, yard maintenance, air duct vacuuming, laundry service, and food delivery are a few things that will make this transition much easier for your people.

As a woman in real estate, my guess is you didn’t have “influencer” on your list of duties. But social media is a powerful, free tool for lead generation, to boost your authority, and convey your niche expertise.

"Why did we move, mom?"

My 13-year-old posed the question as we walked around our favorite park from the old neighborhood.

I explained that you make decisions in life to change your circumstances, expand, or ground you—even if for a blip in time. We have no idea where these decisions might lead or what doors they might open. They key is to trust that they were made with the best intentions with the information available at the time.

(And that it's still really hard even at 48 to embrace this).

If I can model anything for her in life and business, it's that contentment comes from within first. When we have that first, any location seems like the best.

It's not quite resonating with her yet (ah, teens). But I like that we get to have these conversations so she feels heard and validated and can understand the power of choice.

It shows up and feels innately different from person to person. But no arguing how vital it is if you're marketing your real estate business online.

People purchase based on emotion and sharing yourself openly and honestly is a one-way ticket to relatability with your audience.

I’m here to tell you being vulnerable doesn't have to look like:

👋🏼 Dear Diary type of posts
👋🏼 Airing dirty laundry
👋🏼 Twerking on Reels
👋🏼 Forced smiles for a selfie
👋🏼 Constantly sharing your income

Vulnerability can look like:

👍🏼 Identifying where to push yourself and where to meet yourself
👍🏼 Having notes or a script if it helps with your live video
👍🏼 Sharing a tidbit about your life and hobbies
👍🏼 Sharing a simple insight or lesson
👍🏼 Recording your video content if live makes you too anxious
