I was laying in bed last night thinking about this great story I wanted to use in my post today. I had it all mapped out in my brain and I knew exactly how I was going to tie it into today's post. But I didn’t write it down. So when I woke up this morning, I couldn’t for the life of me remember what it was I wanted to talk about. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

So today, this post is a much needed reminder for me, and a great step two in our caption series!

WRITE DOWN YOUR IDEAS.

Do any of you draw a blank when it’s time to sit down and create a post? It’s because most of the time our best ideas come to us randomly, not when we are trying to force it. So when inspiration strikes, you need to write down the idea to use later! Don't let a good idea pass you by because you are out at dinner or going to bed like I was. I keep an ongoing note on my phone where I can add bits and pieces to use for your posts later. A lot of the time I don’t use everything I write down, but having it there lets me sort through my thoughts and use the best pieces of content I have. It also leaves content topics for you if you ever want to revisit something later.

I bet if I asked you right now, you could tell me one or two of your business competitors that you have. Almost all of the companies I have worked with or for in the past have always known exactly who their competitors are, the quality of their product, and what they offer.

Today I'm kicking off the caption series with my first hack to writing a good caption!

Think about your competitors and their marketing. Is there something that they are doing that you wish you were better at? Maybe they get more comments on their posts than you do, or they have more page likes. These are things that you can have too!

To get started, I want you to find 6-8 Instagram pages that you love. Look for accounts that get great engagement, have awesome posts, and inspire you to have a better page. And then follow them. Yes, this can even be a competitors page. Following other businesses is a great way to see what does and doesn't work. After you follow these pages, look through their profile and find the posts that get higher engagement and more likes. Notice what kind of pictures they are using and what their captions say. Once you find them, recreate them! We already know those posts are doing well, which takes the guesswork and stress out of producing a good caption or post.

After that you can try recreating all different kinds of posts to see what works best for your business. If you notice one thing might not be working as well, then try another! Marketing is all about trying and retrying to find the best results for you.

Are you living your best caption life yet!?

If you missed yesterday's post I talked all about telling stories and why they are a huge component in building your brand. I believe there are a lot of great ways to write a good caption and so I am excited to announce I will be starting a small series on my process for writing a good one! I will be posting the steps I use when putting together a new post and what can determine if your post ends up being a win or a fail.

Stay tuned!

My friend called me yesterday as she was leaving Target.

Completely mortified she let me know that her 5 month old daughter had thrown up all over the brand new Halloween display and the floor. Deciding to stay calm, she had tried to get the attention of one of the employees to help her clean it up. But unfortunately a woman walked by and stepped RIGHT. IN. THE. MIDDLE. OF. THE. PUKE. So instead of notifying the employee, she grabbed her kids, left the lady, the puke, and headed for her car!

She couldn’t wait to call and tell me how horrible it was! 😂

We’ve all been there, right?

Not necessarily leaving baby puke on the Target floor, but completely captivated while listening to our friends’ embarrassing moments, reminiscing on things that happened in the past, or texting your family about the drama that happened at work.

Why do we do these things!?

Because we as people LOVE stories.

People don’t buy brands. They buy the stories behind the brands, and the way that the brand makes them feel. When you add your own personal story to your captions, it builds trust with your audience and it makes sharing on social media much more fun! Let your customers see your “behind the scenes”, show them the things that you are passionate about, or something embarrassing that happened to you! Your audience will love it, and so will your engagement.

Try it out! Let me know if this changes anything for you.

And always remember, no judgement if your kids throw up all over Target.

Are you sitting scrolling through Facebook and you realize you haven't posted on your Business page in weeks? You are always so busy running things day to day that trying to post always seems like an after thought. So you quickly pull out your phone to find a picture to post. You open Facebook, add your picture of a fun activity your team did this week, and then throw up a "We love our employees!" and call it good. Does this sound like you?

If so, start scheduling your posts!

When you schedule them you let your customers know exactly what to expect from you. It builds consistency and trust with your customers, but also with Facebook. Facebook wants to show your content, it's how they make money. So the more often you post, and the more engagement you get, the more likely you're content will reach more people. When you post consistently you gain more followers and more customers. And it's way easier to create a good quality post and schedule posts from your couch, than it is in the middle of a stressful day at work.

Start scheduling your posts, I promise you'll see a difference.

And if you aren't sure what scheduling platform to use? There are a ton of free options out there that give you the freedom to plan and schedule posts when you have the time! Let us know in the comments if you are interested in a post on our favorite platforms.

Which do you prefer to manage your Google My Business page? Desktop or the Mobile App?

I love the App! It makes managing your business soooo much easier. A few reasons why you should download it right now:

1. It's FREE.
2. You always have your phone with you, you don't always have a computer.
3. You can answer questions and respond to messages from clients immediately. Boost your response times!
4. Quickly make updates to your business details, such as your phone number, address, and operating hours. (A great feature to have, especially during Covid-19!)
5. Share updates and photos about your business, events and special offers.

Let me know if you decide to give the app a try 😃

Negative reviews SUCK!

How do you deal with it when someone leaves you a bad review? Do you immediately respond and fire off a feisty retort? Hopefully not!

First, take a deep breathe. Negative reviews can take a toll on your emotions. Especially when you put so much time and energy into your business!

Second, look for any interactions the reviewer has had with your business. This helps build your case for when you respond to the review. Make sure that you know exactly what they visited for, purchased, or what their experience was.

Third, if you can reach out to the customer, we recommend that you do it as soon as possible! This catches them off guard. A lot of reviewers who leave negative reviews are not expecting you to confront the problem head on. Try to resolve the issue with them if you can. If you are able to fix it, ask them if they would be willing to change their review.

Finally, if they do not edit their review, this is the time for you to respond. Don’t forget this step, it’s the most important part! Responding to reviews shows potential customers that you know how to resolve an issue and it builds trust with them (it also helps build your SEO) We like to start a response out with “thank you for the feedback of our business”. Give a brief explanation about the issue they were having. Acknowledge that you reached out to resolve the issue and then let them know you are happy to talk further if needed!

And that’s it. Hopefully you’ll never have to deal with a negative review again, but if you do.... Copy Paste Repeat!

How do you get new reviews? Do you hope for the best or are you actively asking your customers to review your business?

A well thought out plan can improve your chances of getting a new review while also increasing the quality of them.

If you are just getting started, we recommend making it a goal to get three new reviews a week!
