Valentine’s Day Around the World.

Love is in the air… because Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. In the United States, chocolate, candy, cards and presents are the staples of February 14th, but have you ever wondered how other countries celebrate Valentine’s Day? Lets take an imaginary tour around the world to find out!

Argentina and Uruguay- One day is not enough to celebrate love in these South American countries, so they dedicate a whole week to honor it. They designated the first week of July as "Sweetness Week," when lovers and friends exchange candy, kisses, and good cheer.

Brazil- "Dia dos enamorados" ("Lovers' day") is celebrated on June 13, a date in which couples exchange gifts, cards and candy. Some single women also perform rituals (simpatias) to get in the good graces of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of Finding One’s Spouse, whose feast is observed on June 13.

England- Among the many Valentine's Day traditions across England, a common one has to do with children singing special songs, for which they get candy, fruit, or money in return. Another English tradition is baking Valentine buns with plums, raisins, or caraway seeds.

Even though the language of love is universal, people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day in different dates and ways. What’s your favorite Valentines personal or family tradition?

Happy Valentines Day!

A Venezuelan Christmas

Gaita music is a cherished Christmas tradition in Venezuela. This regional genre from the state of Zulia involves rhyming vocals supported by four-string guitars and maracas. These festive tunes create a joyful atmosphere that brings families and communities together.

Many homes put up a Christmas tree, but the most authentic Venezuelan custom is to display a nacimiento (Nativity scene). On December 25 children awake to find their gifts around the Nacimiento or the Christmas tree. And the Christmas festivities come to an official closing on January 6, the Day of the Reyes Magos (the day the three Wise Men who came to visit Mary).

It’s time to Celebrar!

Summer is over, but the fall brings us another reason to celebrate: The National Hispanic Heritage Month. This celebration honors the cultural heritage and contributions of people who came to the United States from South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Mexico.

Hispanic Heritage Month was originally a week-long observance in 1968 but has since expanded to a full month, beginning on September 15th. This date is noteworthy because it marks the independence of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence days during this month.

Throughout the US and especially in Hispanic communities, a vast number of events take place throughout the month. Find those closest to you and join the celebration!

What do you appreciate most about this celebration? How are you planning to celebrate it? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

In Puerto Rico, Reyar (“To King”) means to celebrate the Día de Reyes (Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day) with festivals and religious ceremonies.

To celebrate the day in which the Three Wise Men arrived with presents for Baby Jesus, children across Europe and Latin America receive presents on January 6th.

Some of these countries celebrate an Epiphany Procession, in which people dress up as the Three Wise Men and ride through the streets on horses or carriages.

Children write letters to the Three Wise Men telling them which presents they would like to receive. In Spain, children place their shoes on the balcony, and the Three Kings will leave their presents inside the shoes. In Argentina, the shoes are the place where children leave their letters to the Three Wise Men. In Puerto Rico, little ones pick grass for the Three Kings’ Camels and leave it for them in shoeboxes.

As for culinary Epiphany traditions, in Mexico they celebrate with a cake called Rosca de Reyes, which is called Roscón de Reyes in Spain.

No matter how you celebrate this special day, we hope that it is brings back memories of your cherished childhood traditions and is filled with joy and harmony!

Feliz Día de Reyes from your friends at Suá Advertising!

Could Frosty the Snowman live in Florida?
Why does Santa come down the chimney?
¿Cómo caminan las nubes?
How do reindeer fly?
Why the Three Wise Men were called Kings?

The answers might elude us, but this is still the Season to believe in magic and miracles.
‘Tis the time of the year when anything can happen.
When we keep alive our traditions, from a jolly Snowman to a gift-giving Santa.
We believe in flying reindeer and in clouds that walk.

And above all, we hope that you have a wonderful and magical 2024!
