Valentine’s Day Around the World.
Love is in the air… because Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. In the United States, chocolate, candy, cards and presents are the staples of February 14th, but have you ever wondered how other countries celebrate Valentine’s Day? Lets take an imaginary tour around the world to find out!
Argentina and Uruguay- One day is not enough to celebrate love in these South American countries, so they dedicate a whole week to honor it. They designated the first week of July as "Sweetness Week," when lovers and friends exchange candy, kisses, and good cheer.
Brazil- "Dia dos enamorados" ("Lovers' day") is celebrated on June 13, a date in which couples exchange gifts, cards and candy. Some single women also perform rituals (simpatias) to get in the good graces of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of Finding One’s Spouse, whose feast is observed on June 13.
England- Among the many Valentine's Day traditions across England, a common one has to do with children singing special songs, for which they get candy, fruit, or money in return. Another English tradition is baking Valentine buns with plums, raisins, or caraway seeds.
Even though the language of love is universal, people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day in different dates and ways. What’s your favorite Valentines personal or family tradition?
Happy Valentines Day!
