Day 97

Day 97 is colorful.

It’s National Crayon Day! Hooray! Isn’t everyone pumped?

Not really, we know, but crayons will forever be irreplaceable symbols of childhood, creativity and color. Oh and wax, too, lots of wax. Lots of breaking the them in half. Lots of crayon marks on things that shouldn’t have crayon on them - like walls and furniture. And lots of monsters, snowmen, silly faces, trees and trucks.

To celebrate, we’ve created a new color District Gold - in honor, not only of National Crayon Day, but also in anticipation of this year’s AAF District 4 Gala and Conference coming up on April 26 in Orlando. Of course, we’re fingers-crossed on winning, but we’re most excited that L+R CCO and Partner Art Hardie will be a featured speaker during the conference on the morning of the event. That’s more exciting than any award.

Details coming soon about that. In the meantime, think about pulling out some crayons today. Have a little fun. And draw a monster.

Day 96 is an Anthony appreciation post.

About 6 months ago, our longtime colleague and friend Chris Bare of Torii Gate Marketing and now AAF Orlando Silver Medal winning fame, introduced us to a young Full Sail University graduate named Anthony DeRoss.

What started as a few conversations has led to a great friendship and professional relationship. As Anthony is transitioning from student to pro, we’ve been honored to bring him along with Lawson + Rose for a few legit client experiences. Most recently, he interned for a day as a Production Assistant on a photoshoot for our new chiropractic client.

Not only was he extremely helpful, but he was also mature, professional, quickly aware of the photoshoot dynamic, and even found his way into the shoot as a model. Once, to workout on a diabolic Reverse Lower Back Hamstring Machine of Death, and the second time to get shot in the neck with an Infrared Laser.

He survived. And the shoot turned out great. But that’s not the point. The point is that when you find a young talent, firstly, we’re grateful for the introduction. But it’s also our duty to let the world know that this guy is out there and ready for work.

Plus, he looks totally New York chic with a martini in hand.

Thanks for everything Anthony. Keep up the good work. You’re going to find solid ground in this field. We just know it.

Day 93 is all about tomorrow morning!

Wed, March 5 Citrus Club
AAF Orlando Caffeinated Creatives
Free coffee and breakfast pastries
From 7:30am to 9am

This event - sponsored by Lawson + Rose Advertising, Toraja Mountain Coffee and the Citrus Club - will be our first collective hangout since the Addys Gala. So we’re sure there’s lots to talk about. And with new members coming into AAF, this should be a great one - for agencies looking for young talent, and young talent looking for agencies, or collaboration between us all. The event also includes awesome views of downtown from the 18th floor of the Citrus Tower, in this typically members-only, exclusive venue.

For those who weren’t there, we tried last month, but literally the electricity in about two or three square blocks just went out for an hour. This time we’re promising power. And a great time.

For easy parking, access the Citrus Center parking lot on Jackson, right across from the car entrance at Grand Bohemian.

Any other questions, just drop them in the chat here. Otherwise, see you in the morning!

Day 92 is genius.

At Lawson + Rose, we believe in the ultimate power of team and community. And that together, people have an exponential levelling up effect. So 1+1 doesn’t equal 2, it’s more like 4.

Therefore when someone at L+R receives an individual award, we know it’s actually the result of our entire team. That said, we’re honored to for Art Hardie to receive the 2025 Orlando AAF Advocate Award for Creative Genius. According to AAF Orlando site, this is a local nomination-based award which “recognizes an individual whose creative contributions have set new standards and inspired others.”

Well, we’re honored and thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s a recognition of not only our individual talents, but also our process and dedication to creating work at the highest standards with the hopes to inspire our clients, peers and young creatives.

Thanks again AAF Orlando. And kudos once more for a standout gala.

Day 91 of 100

Day 91 is about trophies and thank yous.

We had the privilege of attending the 2025 Orlando American Advertising Gala this weekend at the Marriott Downtown Orlando.

For those who may not be in our industry, this is an event in which agencies send their most creative work to an anonymous panel of out-of-market judges - who then score the work on a 1 - 100 scale. Based on an average of the scores received, the work is then ranked within its category (such as Print, Online/Interactive, Packaging, etc.) The highest scores get Gold, better than average get Silver, and the rest get a chicken and steak dinner with a really cute little dessert.

In addition, the best of each higher level category gets a “Best of” award for producing the top creative work in that space. This year, Lawson + Rose was fortunate to earn one of these dangerously-sharp crystal trophies for Best of Sales and Marketing in recognition for our Needle Creek Farm Brewery Packaging. That means we made beer cans. But not just any beer cans, absolutely stunning cans that added to the depth and meaning of the brand, while helping tell the story of the brewery and its landscape, people and history.

That’s what truly excellent writing and design can do. It magnifies the power of your brand and  product. And can also earn a spot on stage for the people who create it.

Many thanks to the judges, whoever you are, and super thanks to AAF Orlando and Marriott Hotels for hosting this wonderful, stylish event. In the following days, we’ll break down more of what happened on this memorable night, including sharing great times with our industry peers and the other awards we were lucky enough to bring home.

Day 90 of 100

Day 90 is milky.

Today we wander into City of Orlando’s Milk District, on the corner of Primrose and Livingston, right across the street from Primrose Lanes.

There you’ll find a power box.

Painted in primary colors. Featuring an abstract map of the milk district, cows, old fashioned jugs, bottles and urns. What’s the point of this, you may be wondering? Well, this particular power box was painted by none other than Chris Work, Partner and Creative Director here at Lawson + Rose.

The box honors the 1925 founding of TG Lee Dairy , which still operates a milk processing plant and distribution center, right down the street where the Lee’s founded their dairy with just 20 acres of land, and one family cow named Hopper. From there, the dairy grew to be Florida’s hometown dairy, and one of its largest.

So in 2008, the Milk District, as its now called, was incorporated, and a couple of years later, they commissioned artists to jazz up the place with murals, signs and painted power boxes. Now, more than a decade later, Chris’ work still stands. The primary colors never go out of fashion and were chosen to match the colors of the original TG Lee milk cartons.

For the record, we actually prefer TG Lee milk. It is super good. Especially the 2% blue cap one. There’s something special going on in there.

Day 88 is about tomorrow morning.

Last call for Caffeinated Creatives!

Tomorrow morning from 7:30 to 9am - or whenever you roll in still wearing pajamas (business casual jammies that is) - AAF Orlando is meeting up in the Citrus Club.

The purpose? Well, there isn’t really a defined purpose.

But our guess is that we’re supposed to enjoy great coffee, FREE, from Toraja Mountain Coffee. Delicious pastries and beautiful morning views, also FREE, from the club. And technically we’re supposed to enjoy each other’s company. Maybe talk about advertising, the fog, why the Magic keep losing and other varieties of breakfast-worthy banter.

It’s fancy time.

Be there! Or don’t, but not being there is lame. So yeah, be there!

Day 87 of 100

Day 87 is about strategy and art.

One of our favorite quotes ever came from a University of Florida advertising professor who once said, “Creativity without strategy is called art. Creativity with strategy is called advertising.”

The point he’s making here is a strong one. Creative work for the sake of itself is not what we do in branding and advertising. We are instead on a mission to get people to pay attention to the value of our clients’ products or services. To do that, yes our creativity needs to break through the cluttered spaces online, on TV, in magazines, etc. But more than that, once we get someone’s attention, that attention must be directed to some sort of value proposition or at least a recognition of the message - which is usually something like look at how awesome our company is or here’s a sale you might be interested in.

All of this requires strategy to drive the work. It requires us to understand your brand, but more importantly to understand the audience and what their consumer journey might be - even in the B2B space. Unpacking this demands that we listen, that we have good taste, that we have experience, intelligence and talent, and that we connect all of these moving parts with an actionable strategy that does in fact drive the work.

As much as we love that quote at the beginning, it does have one flaw. To say “creativity without strategy is called art,” is to only sometimes be correct. Plenty of artists create a work with a strategy to promote certain social causes or make political statements - Banksy comes to mind immediately here.

So, art can in fact have strategy. But for the purposes of Lawson + Rose, everything we do has a strategy behind it. As stated before, that’s to get your target audience to pay attention to the value of your product or service.

It’s really that simple. Strategy drives the work.

Day 86 of 100

Day 86 is sizzlin’.

That’s right. Today’s post is just a little tease about a full Brand Identity we created for an all-new, upstart quick service restaurant called Sizzlin’ Greens. And when we say full, we mean everything from the exterior signage, to food photography, logo, voice and messaging, website, to-go packaging, uniforms ane more.

Anyway, Sizzlin’ Greens is for real open now in Winter Garden, and the restaurant combines organic salad greens with fresh-grilled proteins. Family-owned and operated. All ingredients are sourced with care. The recipes are absolutely delicious. So, look it up. You won’t be sorry with a visit - lunch or dinner.

Now back to the work. This is just a tease of the full case study coming soon. Which we’ve already prepped for our new website and award show entry (wish us luck.)

Have a great weekend, everyone. See ya Monday.

Day 85 of 100

Day 85 is an Orlando afternoon appreciation post.

Central Florida has been Lawson + Rose’s home since the beginning. There’s simply something special about this city.

It’s the people. They’re funny. They’re kind. They’re ambitious, weird, creative, energetic and curious. Sure there are plenty of big cities in Florida, but none have the people we’ve got here. And for that we’re thankful.

This time of year, the weather starts to turn from winter into early summer, fast. Today, in late January, it was 80 degrees and sunny outside. The way the sun hits and angles around early afternoon is something to behold. It’s an orange glow of warmth that makes it hard to work - pulling you outside for a jog or a bike ride. It’s a reminder that you’re alive and there are plenty of reasons to smile and let the light in, even in your darkest days.

Thank you Orlando for being such a great home. We aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Now if we could make downtown an even friendlier place for entertainment and business, even at night, we’d be even more grateful.

Thanks to the Citrus Club for the great views from above!
