🖨️ Pro Tips: Solving Mimaki Large Format Print Quality Issues
Is your Mimaki printer producing streaks, banding, or dull colors? Maintaining high-quality output on Mimaki large format printers requires a combination of strict maintenance, proper environmental controls, and accurate software settings.
Here is a guide to diagnosing and fixing the most common print quality problems.
1. Tackling Banding (Horizontal Lines)
Banding is often caused by media feed issues, nozzle clogs, or incorrect head height.
Run a Media Calibration (Feed Comp): If the printer feeds too much or too little material, lines will appear. Run the MEDIA COMP. function in the menu to correct the step-feed adjustment.
Enable MAPS (Mimaki Advanced Pass System): This technology uses an algorithm to minimize banding between passes. Ensure it is turned on in your RasterLink software.
Adjust Head Height: If the head is too low, it can cause drag; too high, and it causes spray.
Check Media Temperature: If the heater is too high, it can make the media wavy or cause white-looking streaks.
2. Nozzle Clogs & Missing Nozzles
A test print is your first line of defense. If the nozzle check is missing lines, try these steps:
Automatic Cleaning: Run a "Normal" or "Soft" clean.
Clean Capping Station & Wipers: Dried ink on the wipers or caps prevents the head from sealing properly. Replace wipers monthly and clean the cap tops regularly.
Manual Cleaning/Nozzle Wash: If automatic cleaning fails, use Mimaki cleaning solution to wash the nozzles.
Check White Ink: White ink settles quickly. Ensure you are shaking white cartridges daily.
3. Fixing Fuzzy or Grainy Prints
Check Drop Position (Drop Pos Correct): If printing bidirectional, misaligned heads will cause a "double image" or fuzzy look. Perform a DROP. POS CORRECT adjustment.
Clean the Encoder Strip: A dirty encoder strip (the clear plastic strip behind the carriage) causes the printer to lose position. Clean it carefully with water or alcohol.
Improve Resolution: Increase the number of passes in RasterLink, or switch to a higher resolution, lower-speed printing mode.
4. Color Inconsistency & Misalignment
Use the Correct ICC Profiles: Ensure your media profile in RasterLink matches the actual vinyl or banner material you are using.
Check Ink Density: If colors are too light, adjust the ink density settings in the software.
Replace Dampers: If colors are erratic or banding won't go away, the dampers may have lost their "prime" and need to be replaced.
5. Summary of Daily/Weekly Maintenance
Daily: Perform a test draw, clean the wiper, and shake white ink.
Weekly: Perform a "Nozzle Wash" (soaking the heads) and clean the area around the head.
