Celebrating 60 Years of Independence 🇬🇾✨

On May 26, 1966, Guyana became the first English-speaking country in South America to gain independence from British rule.

Over the decades, Guyana has faced political struggles, economic hardship, and periods of division — but the nation continues to rebuild and redefine itself. Today, Guyana is experiencing rapid development through major investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, technology, housing, and energy. With growing international attention and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, the country is entering a new era of opportunity and transformation.

Known as the “Land of Many Waters,” Guyana remains rich in culture, resilience, diversity, and Caribbean pride. As a Guyanese-owned platform, celebrating this milestone is deeply important to us as we honor our roots, our people, and the future of our homeland.

Happy 60th Independence Anniversary, Guyana! 🇬🇾💛

For years, major brands treated social media like a side project.

Something for the interns.
Something for the “young people.”
Something to repost flyers on after the real marketing was already done through television, radio, newspapers, and billboards.

And yet, every few months, the internet reminds us that culture no longer waits for permission from traditional media.

The recent explosion of IShowSpeed across the Caribbean should be a wake-up call to every business, media company, tourism board, festival promoter, politician, and legacy brand still underestimating digital culture.

Millions of adults across the Caribbean and the diaspora asked the same question:
“Who is this guy?”

Meanwhile, the children already knew.

Teenagers knew.
Young adults knew.
Gamers knew.
TikTok knew.
YouTube knew.
The algorithm knew.

By the time traditional media started trying to explain who IShowSpeed was, he had already impacted tourism conversations, local businesses, online search trends, and youth engagement across multiple islands.

That is the disconnect.

The people making many marketing decisions are often not participating in the spaces where culture is actually being shaped.

And culture today moves at the speed of content.

Not cable television.
Not newspaper deadlines.
Not polished corporate campaigns that took six months and twelve committee meetings to approve.

A teenager with a phone can now influence travel trends faster than a tourism board.
A streamer can generate more attention than a million-dollar ad campaign.
A viral clip can create more conversation than a primetime television interview.

That is not theory anymore.
That is reality.

The Caribbean especially must understand this shift because our region has always been driven by culture.

Music.
Carnival.
Dance.
Fashion.
Comedy.
Food.
Energy.
Personality.

These things were built for social media before social media even existed.

Yet many Caribbean brands still approach digital marketing like it is an add-on instead of the center of modern communication.

Too many businesses still ask:
“How many followers do they have?”

Instead of asking:
“How much attention do they command?”
“How deeply do they influence behavior?”
“How connected are they to community?”
“How fast do they move culture?”

Attention is the new currency.

And social media has decentralized who controls it.

The old model told us that power belonged only to the biggest media companies.
Now we are watching creators outperform networks.
Independent personalities outperform corporations.
Streamers outperform advertising agencies.

Not because they have bigger budgets.
Because they understand connection.

Authenticity travels faster than polish.

Young audiences can sense when content is forced.
They know when brands are pretending.
They know when executives arrive late to trends they dismissed six months earlier.

And here is the uncomfortable truth:
many adults only validate something after it reaches millions.

When the kids were watching IShowSpeed years ago, many adults laughed at it.
When the clips first started going viral, they dismissed it as nonsense.
When the fan base grew, they ignored it.

But once the numbers became impossible to ignore, suddenly everybody wanted to understand the phenomenon.

That cycle keeps repeating itself.

First comes ridicule.
Then confusion.
Then mass adoption.
Then corporations try to catch up.

By then, the culture has already moved on.

This is why brands must stop treating social media managers like button pushers and start treating digital culture as strategy.

Because social media is no longer “new media.”

It is the main stage.

The next global movement may not come from a television network.
It may come from a Twitch stream.
A TikTok creator.
A podcast clip.
A livestream from Carnival.
A teenager editing videos from their bedroom in Kingston, Port of Spain, Georgetown, Miami, or Orlando.

The brands that survive the next decade will not simply advertise.

They will listen.

They will participate in culture early instead of waiting for validation from traditional gatekeepers.

And most importantly, they will finally understand that influence no longer starts at the top.

It starts in the scroll.
