Getting media coverage is one thing. Getting the right media coverage is another.

When Muck Rack compared the journalists brands most often pitched to with the journalists AI most often cited regarding those brands, the overlap was just 2%.

That matters as more buyers use AI platforms to research companies and make decisions.

Public relations can't just focus on getting your name into more publications. It needs to focus on earning credible coverage from the sources that carry authority with people and increasingly with AI.

AI visibility isn't a volume game.

Search engine optimization has a role in AI visibility. But it isn't the whole strategy.

Muck Rack's analysis of more than 25 million links cited across AI platforms found:
84% were from earned media (public relations)
15.7% were owned content and social media, including SEO
0.3% were paid media and ads

Organizations thinking about generative engine optimization need to look beyond their own websites.

PR is what earns credible, third-party coverage (the largest share of what AI systems are actually citing).

Is your AI visibility strategy accounting for the 84%?

As more people turn to AI platforms to research companies, one question matters more than ever: What information is AI using to learn about your brand?

Research analyzing more than 25 million AI-cited links found that about 84% come from earned media.

Earned media is coverage a journalist or editor chooses to publish because it's relevant and newsworthy. It helps build the credibility AI platforms rely on when generating answers.

Owned content, social media, and SEO still play a role. But earned media makes up a much larger share of the sources AI actually cites.

If AI visibility is becoming part of your marketing strategy, public relations should be part of the conversation too.

Public relations often gets brought in after the marketing plan is finished.

That's a missed opportunity. The strongest campaigns are built with PR from the beginning.

When marketing and PR work together, organizations create more consistent messaging, stronger credibility, and greater visibility across every channel.

And now, that visibility extends to AI. AI platforms rely heavily on credible, third-party sources when generating answers. PR helps earn the media coverage that gives AI more trusted information to find, understand, and cite about your organization.

Search engine optimization can help your website get found. But when it comes to AI visibility, it’s only part of the picture.

According to Muck Rack’s analysis of more than 25 million links cited across AI platforms, the sources break down like this:
👉 Earned media: 84%
👉 Owned content and social media, including SEO: 15.7%
👉 Paid media and advertorials: 0.3%

That changes the conversation around generative engine optimization, the practice of helping your brand show up when AI platforms answer buyer questions.

If your GEO strategy is focused mainly on optimizing your own website, you’re focusing on the smaller piece of the equation.

Public relations earns the credible, third-party media coverage that makes up the largest share of what AI actually cites.

Is your AI visibility strategy focused on the 15.7% or the 84%?

Media relations is all about giving journalists a reason to care. It's not about sending more pitches.

The strongest stories connect a company’s expertise or news to something timely, relevant, and useful for the publication’s audience.

That means understanding what journalists cover, what their readers care about, and where your organization can genuinely add value.

Remember, it's about the story, not the company.

Thought leadership used to belong to a select few. Today, anyone can publish, but not everyone earns trust.

Are you contributing meaningful insights that help your audience think differently, solve problems, or navigate change?

Real thought leadership is consistently sharing expertise that creates value first. When you do that, credibility follows.

Is your content adding to the conversation or the noise?

A common misconception about media relations is that it's all about the pitch.

In reality, the story comes first.

Journalists receive hundreds of pitches every week. The ones that stand out are timely, relevant, and offer something their audience will genuinely find valuable.

Before you hit send, ask yourself: Would someone outside of my organization care about this?

If the answer is yes, you're headed in the right direction.
