Dana and I have just started as volunteers for Turtle Patrol Volusia. This past Thursday evening we had the great fortune of seeing this young Leatherback sea turtle deposit her eggs. She's on the smaller side at 500-600 pounds and at least 25 years old. She builds her nest and deposits the eggs in a tubular cavity she makes and covers them for protection. She may have deposited as many as 75 softball size eggs that take 60-70 days to incubate. The eggs have no gender. Male and female turtles are dependent on the sand temperature. Warm sand produces females, cool produces males.
