“The view that machines cannot give rise to surprise is due, I believe, to a fallacy to which philosophers and mathematicians are particularly subject. This is the assumption that as soon as a fact is presented to a mind, all consequences of that fact spring into the mind simultaneously with it”.

More posts I am making for the University of Edinburgh:

“The Gross National Product of EverQuest, measured by how much wealth all the players together created in a single year inside the game. It turned out to be US$2,266 per capita. By World Bank [2001] rankings, that made EverQuest richer than India, Bulgaria, or China, and nearly as wealthy as Russia. It was the 77th richest country in the world. And it didn’t even exist…”

Someone asked me how I felt about the election results.

I have had the same opinion for over ten years. We place to much weight and power into the president, the system should be focused in a way that the president, while important, should not be able to decide the fate of an entire nation or even half of it regardless of how much you believe in them or don't.

This is our nation not theirs and that is exactly how we should act every day.

I am upset no matter who is elected, because not once in the last 20 years (and longer) has more than 70% of the population voted for them.

which to me does not sound like a democracy.

If you want to understand a way forward, a better one, start reading my writings a bit more, start believing that YOU can build the world you want and you don't need someone else to do it for you.

Democracy is not about just the ability to choose, it's about the power to choose, to be able to build and create the world WE believe in, together.

We were discussing the ethical implications of AI in education in one of my courses, I mentioned the issues of the "digital divide" and echo chambers created by it and I do truly think those are major issues AI is creating we must deal with.

But the concept of "over reliance" on ai and tech came up which is a strong point for me as well, this is an overview of my current response that sums up how ironic I find that concept:

Now I am less worried about this (reliance on ai) as I think the philosophical argument of "reliance" on technology is simply the regurgitation of "back in my day" syndrome that every generation falls to.

Consider how GPS and spell-checkers have transformed our daily lives. Once, navigation and impeccable spelling were hallmarks of expertise. Now, they're accessible to anyone with a smartphone.

Did this make us less capable? Hardly. Instead, it raised the bar for what we consider basic competency and plenty of people today still spend time learning how to navigate with a map or compass (myself being one of those people).

This same principle applies to AI in education. Tools like Eduba (my software we were talking about) don't replace critical thinking; they elevate it. By handling lower-order tasks, AI frees our cognitive resources for higher-order thinking. In a world where basic facts are at our fingertips, the true measure of intellect becomes how we analyze, synthesize, and apply that information at a new level of creative and critical thought now made available due to the technology.

As AI handles the 'what' of information, humans are challenged to focus on the 'why' and 'how'. This shift doesn't dumb us down—it pushes us to new heights of cognitive performance. Just as calculators allowed us to tackle more complex mathematical problems, AI in education propels us towards more nuanced understanding and creative problem-solving. The result? A new normal where yesterday's expert-level output becomes today's starting point.

We're not becoming over-reliant on technology; we're evolving alongside it, constantly redefining what it means to think critically in an AI-augmented world perspectives. Of course, people will use the tech as a crutch or become reliant on it negatively but this has been the case since humankind invented fire. If we lost internet access tomorrow the world would go to crap but that's with or without AI, most people who have the fear we are becoming "over reliant" on AI wouldn't be able to survive without tech they overlook every day anyway.

It's the same issue each generation has had with tech but with a different paint and human choice is at the center of it.

Okay, so hear me out—new idea: politicians should start wearing their sponsors' logos like NASCAR drivers. At least then we'd know exactly who's in their corner.

I just want everyone to understand the speed at which AI is moving, people keep saying "oh its not that good" or "its a waste of time.

In less than a year, AI has gone from being "dang that's cool" to "I can't tell the difference between a real photo"

The first image I generated exactly ONE YEAR ago with a premium beta access account, and it took roughly a minute or two to generate it and lots of prompting to get even close to what I wanted.

The second image I generated in less then 10 seconds for free on an open source website with five sentences of prompting and without really inspecting the image I couldn't tell its not real.

Imagine a year from now, or five, or ten.

Start learning more in depth about AI if you haven't already, its bigger than the printing press, electricity and the internet combined. If you don't believe that, then you haven't learned enough about it.
