Leonardo DiCaprio, born November 11, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, emerged as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors and environmental activists of his generation. He first gained widespread attention in the early 1990s with roles in This Boy’s Life and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, the latter earning him his first Academy Award nomination at age 19. His global breakthrough came with James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic, which became the highest- grossing film of all time (until surpassed by Avatar) and cemented DiCaprio as a heartthrob and serious dramatic talent. Over the following decades, he forged a prolific creative partnership with director Martin Scorsese, starring in films such as Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Known for his intense preparation and versatility, DiCaprio has portrayed real-life figures (Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Jordan Belfort) and fictional antiheroes with equal conviction, finally winning the Best Actor Oscar for his grueling performance in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant in 2016 after five previous acting nominations.
