Cypress Gardens – Moncks Corner, SC

Needing a break while driving back from a golf outing in Myrtle beach I found Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner SC about 30 minutes outside for Charleston. Cypress Gardens is a 170-acre preserve and gardens. The centerpiece of the garden is the 80 acres blackwater bald cypress/tupelo swamp, surrounded with both boat and foot trails. I spent about an hour and a half exploring a major portion of the 4.5 miles of walking trails enjoying the garden areas and watching the boaters try to navigate through the swamp.

Valentine’s day Weekend Get Away

We were able to get a room at the 17Hundred90 Inn and Restaurant at a late date, so we jumped on it and a four-day getaway to Savannha Ga. The final tour day started with a ride on the bullet train from Fukuoka to Osaka, a trip of two and a half hours. Kumamoto Castle was completed in 1607 by Kato Kiyomasa, the first feudal lord of the castle. It was innovative in its design and construction for the period. The castle is a hilltop Japanese castle – large and well-fortified. A large earthquake in 1691 did considerable damage to the castle and outbuildings and reconstruction is ongoing. Leaving the castle, we headed to a tea museum & workshop where we attempted to make tie-dyed cloth from tea – needless to say, mine was a bomb that no one would see....

After a 3-hour ride, we arrived at Amano Iwato Shrine in Takachiho built near a cave where Amaterasu (Shinto sun goddess) was hiding from her brother’s cruel pranks, depriving the world of her life-giving light. We had a tour of the cave by a priest. The path to the cave has thousands of stone statues piled along it. Amaterasu deprived light from the world until another female deity performed a lively dance that made the other gods laugh so hard that Amaterasu emerged to find out why....
