“We’ve got to do some things differently in Philadelphia to address the fact that we have a 65% occupancy rate across the district, which means 35% of our seats in our buildings in the district-operated schools are empty,” Watlington said at a news conference in a third-floor classroom.

“We’ve got to do some things differently in Philadelphia to address the fact that we have a 65% occupancy rate across the district," Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr. said Monday.

Join us in voting Built to Last, Philadelphia’s whole-home repair program, onto the national stage at SXSW 2027! 🏠

Built to Last has helped 500+ Philadelphia homeowners stay safely in their homes by fixing critical health and safety repairs and lowering energy costs, all through one coordinated process.

The program already inspired inclusion of a national whole-home repair pilot within the recently enacted 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. Bringing Built to Last to SXSW would build on this win and help raise visibility of the long waitlist of low-income homeowners hoping to receive whole-home repair services.

Voting takes about 30 seconds (just create a free account) and closes August 23. Vote here ➡️ https://tinyurl.com/BTLatSXSW

Through annual internships at The Bellwether District, Philly high school and college students gained hands-on experience, explored career pathways, and worked alongside professionals across engineering, development, environmental remediation, corporate affairs, and more.

Their stories are a reminder that preparing the next generation of leaders takes collaboration, mentorship, and opportunities to learn by doing; and The Bellwether District is leading the way in investing in Philly’s young talent and creating pathways to meaningful careers.
