As Week 4 of studying abroad in Florence comes to a close, here’s a look at some of the highlights so far. Taking courses like Sketching in Florence and The Life and Works of Michelangelo has allowed me to explore many of the city’s most iconic sites. This week, our Michelangelo class toured the Cappelle Medicee, home to the tombs of the Medici family and Michelangelo’s Sacristia Nuova. Our sketching class also ventured to the outskirts of the city, where we spent time drawing at the Cimitero Monumentale delle Porte Sante.

With free time from Friday to Sunday, I’ve also taken short trips to the Colosseum in Rome and the Leaning Tower of Pisa—both just under a two-hour train ride away and some of my favorites of the trip. Beyond the art and architecture, the standout experience has been the incredible food. Four weeks in, we’ve narrowed down our favorite local spots and found our weekly go-tos.

It’s hard to believe the trip is already more than halfway over, but every moment here has been time well spent.

Summer Study Abroad is here and in Florence no less! Join us as we document our journey, exploring the culture, language, sites, and food!

This week we had an amazing opportunity to visit the nearby cites Siena and San Gimignano where we learned about the deeply rooted history of Via Francigena. Through our classes, like Italian Style and Culture, we are putting new meaning to the word Italy!

Day 4 of our High School Summer Program finished!

Today the students worked on editing and composing their zines! For lunch we had a picnic by the Philadelphia Waterworks before heading into the Philadelphia Museum of Art to meet who is the design director there! We learned about typography and the design process behind museum exhibitions!

Back at the studio, the students presented their progress on their zines which will be printed tomorrow!

On Monday, July 8th, the Design on Site class visited ’s design department. There, we spoke with Jenn, Grace, Julia, and Sara. Between the thorough presentation and the Q&A afterward, we learned what being a designer for a luxury jewelry brand entails – from conceptualizing product photoshoots to designing billboards and advertisements. They explained how they keep their creativity flowing while working within the brand guidelines, the intricacies of designing print materials, and how AI is being incorporated into their workflow. Thank you so much to Jenn and the team for such a great presentation and tour of the office!

Day 2 of our 2024 Graphic Design Summer Program in the books!

We started the day by looking at our illustrated word exercises from yesterday! Then we introduced our main project and the students got to work. After lunch, we headed to Papo Letterpress workshop where we learned about wooden and metal type and even printed our own letter press proofs!
