Video Effectiveness Checklist šŸŽ¬

Business owners and marketing managers - here’s how to optimize the performance of your video content and maximize your investment of time and money! šŸ’°

As a video marketing guy, I’ve been doing this long enough to notice some clear patterns when it comes to making a video as effective as possible at helping a business build awareness, create authority in their space, and grow affinity for their brand. (Basically, helping people know, like, and trust them.)

Here are the criteria I use to measure how effective a video will be. This is based on a combination of data as well as proven storytelling principles. Next time you create video content, ask yourself these questions to determine whether your video will be the best it can be and maximize your marketing investment.

A lot of this is related to understanding your audience as well as you can. If you can get in their head, you can tailor-make something just for them.

1. Clear Purpose: Does it entertain, educate, build trust, inform, or answer a question? šŸ¤”

2. Relevance: Does the target audience care about the topic? šŸŽÆ

3. Artistic Quality: Does the video have a polished, professional look that reflects well on the brand and aligns with their branding? How is the overall artistic quality, including the use of cinematography, lighting, color, composition, audio quality, and editing style to create a visually appealing experience? Or, is the video authentically raw when appropriate due to budget or branding? (User-generated content can add authenticity)

4. Formatting: Are videos optimized for the intended platform? (9x16, 4x3, 16x9) šŸ“±šŸ’»

5. Engagement: Is the content likely to capture and retain viewer attention through humor, storytelling, engaging information, or emotional appeal? Does the video encourage interaction such as questions, sharing, or commenting? šŸ‘šŸ’¬

6. Clarity: Are ideas communicated clearly and simply without industry jargon that could alienate the audience? šŸ—£

7. Storytelling: Does it have a clear narrative with a beginning, middle, and end, beginning with a good hook that draws people in? (Let them know the value or entertainment they’re about to get!) Does it evoke the right emotions/resonate with your audience? šŸ“–

If you ask yourself these questions going into a video, you will see a big boost in quality, clarity, and effectiveness of your videos right away.

I hope that helps!

If you need professional help with video, even if it’s just me or my team answering your questions about video or to be a sounding board - reach out! We’re happy to serve your business however we can. We’re Occulus Films - Storytellers that Get Results!

Repost for Caleb Marsh:

šŸŽ„ NEAR-FULL-TIME FREELANCE OPPORTUNITY šŸŽ„
(Please read post and comment below; DMs won't be tracked.)

Hey folks, I have a client looking to go hard building a YouTube channel for their custom auto shop. They're willing to commit to paying a someone to make videos working 3-4 days per week for 6-12 months to see if the channel brings in business. Assuming it's going well (which I'm confident it will be) they want to keep it going indefinitely.

This filmmaker needs to know and love cars, know how to shoot on a lightweight modern camera system (FX3 or equivalent), know how to edit videos on a schedule (8-20 minute videos once per week, plus YouTube shorts), be organized, and be an all-around solid person. Myself and the team at Redd Legend will be helping to manage the project, review videos, build the story structure, strategize, etc.

Two questions for y'all:
To everyone, what do you think is a fair monthly rate for working 4 days a week (Monday-Thursday) as a contractor, shooting and editing all videos? Client will pay for gear.
If you are personally interested in this position, drop your info/portfolio below.

I have returned.

Hello friends! I'm looking for a location to film in for approximately 3 days around December. We do have a budget for the location.

I'm looking for something like a beat up old farm house type place, preferably in Arizona somewhere, but open to neighboring states if we have to go that route.

Antiquated, having a feeling of age to it. It being beat up and not in good condition works great actually - so not really looking for a nice place but a place that looks like it has seen a lot. It's supposed to be the home of a small family that has secluded themselves out in the middle of nowhere in the 1930s or so. Poor, just getting by with the bare minimum.

If you know of anything like this, or even remotely close, please do comment, message me here, or email me at nick@occulusfilms!

Well, I was most certainly late in posting, due to some technical errors, like my dumb self messing up with audio on this episode and having to spend a bunch of time trying to fix my mistake.

However, I eventually found success, which you can witness by clicking the link below.

In this episode of the "Don't Suck at Video!" podcast, I talk with Marcus Pittman, CEO of LOOR.tv, a new streaming platform that helps filmmakers tell their stories, uncensored by Hollywood and church ladies. It's like Netflix and Kickstarter had a baby.

We also talk about my post-apocalyptic, scifi world Esotera and where I'm trying to go with it.

You can find the podcast wherever you listen. Feel free to subscribe. Unless you don't feel like it. Then don't subscribe. I won't cry myself to sleep, but I will feel bad for a little while.

How Occulus Films Was Born

It all started with me and my bro.

FYI: I did not know what I was getting into when I wrote this.

The usual intro for our company goes something like, ā€˜Occulus Films is a commercial and film production company based in Arizona. In business since 2013, we offer...’ blah, blah blah.

That’s boring.
