Went to UPS to return a package. Forgot to print the label.
The manager offered to print it for me. Three dollars.

I said: "You're saving me time, gas, and a whole extra trip home. Three dollars is a bargain. Thank you."

She was so surprised.

I laughed. "Now I have money for Aldi's!" holding up my quarter

Everyone in line cracked up.

Here's the thing - a lot of people would've been annoyed it wasn't free.

But three dollars to have someone solve your problem on the spot? That's cheap.

I think about this in my business all the time. How often do we resist paying a fair price for a tool, a service, a little bit of help - because we expect it should be free?

Sometimes paying the $3 is the smartest move you'll make all day.

What's your "$3 label" this week?

My dad is probably the biggest encouragement to playing board games when I was a little girl. He had a high-energy daughter, and he knew cards and board games were the way to engage me, to encourage me to do more math, to read, to focus, to understand, and to problem solve. I give my dad full credit for teaching me and encouraging me to be better than I am.

One of those games is called Trumpet. It was made in 1992 and named Game of the Year. He was enamored with it because he found a magazine review calling it that. This was before the internet, so back then a news article would catch your attention, and you'd investigate it further. He researched this game called Trumpet, but we hadn't touched it or played it since the first time.

So for my dad's birthday and Father's Day this last weekend, we played Trumpet for the first time in 40 years. My dad only vaguely remembers being excited about this game, but I remember exactly how head over heels he was to find it. It's a genuinely interesting, fast-paced little game.

I'm very grateful for what my dad has taught me.

You didn't start your business to spend every day guessing what to post.

But that's where most owners end up.

Not because they don't care.

Because they don't have a system.

They post when they remember. Go quiet when things get busy. Start over every month with no idea what worked and what didn't.

That cycle is exhausting. And it's costing them more than they realize.

The fix isn't posting more. It's building one repeatable system and running it.

When you stop reinventing every week, you stop losing momentum.

If you're stuck in that loop, here's a good place to start: https://wingedgodscreation.com/marketing-health-check.html

You don't need more content ideas. You need to post the 12 you already have.

Business owners aren't bad at content. They're bad at finishing it.

There's a difference.

Bad at content means you don't know what to say. You stare at a blank screen. You second-guess every idea before it gets written down. You need help with topics, angles, and hooks.

Bad at finishing means you have ideas. Maybe a lot of them. But they sit in a notes app, a Google doc, or your head - and nothing gets posted.

If you've been "bad at content" for six months or more, ask yourself this first: Do I actually not know what to say? Or do I know exactly what to say and just never get around to it?

Because they don't have the same fix.

If it's the first problem - start with one audience and one question they always ask you. Answer it. That's your next post.

If it's the second problem - the bottleneck isn't ideas. It's the gap between "I should post something" and actually posting. That gap needs a process, not more inspiration.

Figure out which one you're dealing with. Then fix that thing.

My dad and I were at National Harbor this weekend. They had a carousel - all day, unlimited rides.

The carousel had every kind of animal you can imagine. I didn't look twice at any of them.

There was one sea monster. I made a beeline for it and climbed right on.

My dad looked at me, big grin on my face, and said: "Yeah. It figures you'd pick that one."

That's the thing about the people who really know you. They already know which one you'll pick.

Your business has a sea monster too - the thing that makes you distinctly you.

The question is whether you're building around it or hiding it.

What's yours? Drop it in the comments.

A friend wanted a quilt with her small college's crest on it. The fabric doesn't exist, so she started suggesting shortcuts.

"Let's design it ourselves." A quilt gets cut into squares. Design it wrong and the cutting destroys the art.

"Let's just use college T-shirts." Different material. Wrong tool for the job.

Every shortcut looked easy from the outside. The person who knows the craft sees what breaks.

Same with marketing. Doing it yourself and doing it right aren't the same thing.

My dad keeps a small apartment.

We were talking one day, about life and everything in it, and he said something that stuck with me.

"I don't have a whole lot, Ellen. I don't collect things."

So I told him the truth as I see it.

"You do collect things, Dad. You collect experiences."

That's who he is. It was never about what he owns. It's about what he lives.

He taught me that a full life isn't a full house. It's the moments you say yes to.

I try to build my work the same way. Keep what matters. Let go of the rest.

Happy Father's Day, Dad. And happy birthday. I'm still trying to be like you.

My dad and I were walking the waterfront in Alexandria this Father's Day when we stopped in front of an art structure that said two words:

Now or Never.

No in-between. No "I'll get to it." Just those two options.

It hit me harder than I expected.

Because I work with business owners every day who are living in the gap between now and never. The follow-up email that didn't go out. The system that never got built.

The idea that stayed an idea.

The third option - "someday" - doesn't exist.

Your referral partners want to send you business. Most have no idea how to describe what you do.

Fix it in one afternoon. Write one client story. The problem, what you did, what changed.

Cut it to 30 seconds. Hand it to the people who already like you.

A story sticks. A list of services doesn't.

When marketing feels off, the hardest part is naming what's wrong.

You know leads are slow. You don't know why.

Guessing is expensive.

I built a free Marketing Health Check to fix that. Nine questions. Ten minutes. It shows you what to fix first.
