Apple Fest & Log House Days in Elizabeth Township
Celebrate History and Enjoy Crafts, Dumplings and BBQ Food!
Timing is perfect to get excited about history, good food and crafts as Greenock Log House Days and Apple Fest will be celebrated in Elizabeth Township Saturday, Sept. 26.
Greenock U. M. Church and Elizabeth Township Historical Society annually hosts these events and this year is special because the historical society marks its 50th year as the United States commemorates its 250th birthday. The log house and church are located at 1215 and 1235 Greenock Buena Vista, Elizabeth Township
Crafter & Reenactors
The day will kick off at the Greenock Log House when crafters and artists will sell their creations of jewelry, candles, quilted and sewn items, wreaths and much more from 10 to 5 p.m.
Historical society members will stand for black powder-firings with the 8th Pa. Regiment of the Continental Line who will pitch their tents to share hands-on experience with living in the 18th century.
Log House Days developed as a regional event since the 1790 home was “uncovered” and restoration began almost 20 years ago.
“Each year visitors see the progress made with new collectibles and antiques, tools for house chores like spinning and weaving and cooking in the 18th century. They fill the two-story home, built with oak logs, to offer insights into the way of life for the whole family,” said Linda Bennett, ETHS president.
Farm tools for planting and harvesting continue to be accumulated. Children will be surprised to sit in early school desks in the recreated classroom upstairs.
“Changes are constant to the site which will welcome crafters and vendors to display and sell their creations. This is an opportunity for individuals to showcase their talents,” said Debbie Gilbert, ETHS vice president. Spaces are still available and may be reserved for $25 by calling Debbie Gilbert, at 412-807-8452.
Crafters themselves, ETHS directors Mark Pearson and Scott Conway will sell items in the red barn where baked goods made by ETHS members will be available. Pearson and Scott have also extended the roof line to offer shelter to the area where hot dogs, snacks and beverages will be sold
Apple Fest
The Apple Fest next door at the Greenock U. M. Church annually draws a crowd from noon to 5 p.m. serving BBQ pork, hot sausage, kielbasi with all the sides including haluski.
Visitors know to come early for the “famous” apple dumplings and the all-day bake sale with many apple favorites and a good selection of gluten -free sweets.
Tickets will be sold for an array of baskets filled with home goods, electronics and gift cards.
The Greenock U. M. Preschool will again sing songs from their school days.
A giant, inflatable obstacle course will challenge the youngsters. Game booths with prizes will be set up.
Diane Frank is chairing the Apple Fest with committee chairs Charlotte Matthews, apple dumplings, and Shelby Makosey with Kristin Lawrence, children’s games.
Also, Cindy Gilbert said families may bring previously-worn, Halloween outfits for the first Free Costume Giveaway sponsored by the church’s Outreach and Missions Committee. Free costumes may be selected from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 3 at the church.
