Technology Publishing Company (TPC) is a business-to-business media company covering the protective, marine and industrial coatings industries. TPC offers a variety of market data and insight tools and the curation of custom media. Our mission is to advance the science and technology in these fields by disseminating information about best practices in the selection and use of coatings and related construction materials.

Two cornerstones of the company’s operations are (1) to serve readers across the entire value chain within a business segment, such as suppliers, specifiers, facility owners, and contractors; and (2) to create the highest quality content, in part by recruiting top industry thinkers as advisers and contributors.

Our History

Harold Hower, Ph.D., an educator and editor in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, founded Technology Publishing Company in 1984 to produce the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings (JPCL), focused on good practice in the selection and use of protective and marine coatings for corrosion control. The proprietary, for-profit journal was created to advance the interests of the Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC), a non-profit technical society connected to Carnegie-Mellon University.

The first board of directors for TPC was made up of a prominent SSPC members ─ including the SSPC executive director ─ and to this day, SSPC retains an interest on our board. Within three years of the journal’s launch, the society had grown from 200 to 5000 members and had changed its name to SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings. A subscription to JPCL is a valued member benefit, and the journal was adopted by the industry as the society’s definitive voice.

From 1994 through 2002, TPC introduced a variety of new editorial products and services ─ all focused on the niche technology of protective and marine coatings. These included the monthly journal, Protective Coatings Europe (PCE), provided free to members of 26 European technical societies and trade groups until its sale in 2009; PaintSquare, a web-based industry hub featuring news stories, technical articles, blogs, videos, webinars, e-books and journal archives; and Paint BidTracker, which started with an e-newsletter, offering project leads to paint contractors and vendors, and grew to become a robust website with a suite of subscription-based lead and market data services.

As the company continues to grow, we remain dedicated to delivering quality content to readers and powerful results to advertisers and project partners. Late 2018 TPC launched Water BidTracker, offering project leads and data that is specific to industry. In 2019 TPC started offering custom publications and applications.

Contractor Connect

TPC holds a yearly event that has become one of the most prestigious networking events, Contractor Connect. Contractor Connect is a three-day “hosted-buyer” event for the protective and marine coatings industry that brings together qualified buyers (contractors) and sellers (suppliers). This event is invitation only; however, inquiries are welcomed. Over the course of the event, major industrial coating contractors and suppliers will have substantial opportunities to further develop personal and professional relationships. These enhanced contacts will lead to new business and the growth of existing customer accounts. Additional information can be found on our website.
