Friday Renegade Spotlight: Graham!
It’s been a little while since we’ve run a Friday Renegade Spotlight (life comes at you fast, folks), but we’re back — and this week we’re turning the focus on one of the Renegades’ most spirited teammates, Graham Barnard! Since joining the team in 2022, Graham has brought energy, humor, and a “never give up” playing style that makes him a force in and out of the pool.
In the Pool
Graham’s water polo journey had a few detours before leading him to Pittsburgh. Back in high school, his swim coach tried to get the team interested in polo — it went poorly. Years later, in 2018, a friend invited him to a YMCA pickup game in Alabama, and that’s when he was hooked. By the time he moved to Pittsburgh in 2019, Graham was already looking for a team — and thanks to Joie Marhefka, he found the Renegades.
When it comes to positions, Graham’s philosophy is simple: “Just put me in, coach.” His three-word playing style? “Never give up.”
He even claims to have a signature move — but if he told us what it was, well… we’d never live to tell the tale.
His warmup routine is a mix of land dancing, gym prep, and water drills courtesy of Gensh. And if water polo had walk-up songs, Graham’s would be this gem: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-KLfHGEpK08.
If Graham could steal one skill from a teammate, it’d be the incredible shots from Caden, Dillon, and Siba — the kind where you’re so high out of the water you’re practically levitating.
Favorite memory? Scoring his first ever tournament goal after sneaking out of the Cleveland tourney party early to get eight full hours of sleep. Proof that rest really is the secret weapon.
And if he could play polo anywhere in the world? Forget exotic oceans — Graham would love to set up shop on the lake by his parents’ place in Michigan. Home turf with a splash of nostalgia.
