I LOVE living in the Low Country. I relish the fresh salt air, the sounds of the salt marshes, and the intense glow and embrace of the summer sun. This weekend I've been busy acting on this inspiration by designing some dresses made from fabrics created to reflect Low Country/ Gullah culture. This is the latest collection from Jennylights Designz! The collection starts with a fabric design that celebrates fiddler crabs. This digital water color painting, (made in collaboration with ChatGPT), shows me wearing the first dress in the collection. The location is the historic Charleston Battery, on a sunny Carolina day! It's called "Charleston Battery Day Dress." I hope you like it.

Thank you all so very much for the beautiful birthday wishes, prayers, messages, and expressions of love. Your kindness reminded me again that “Every good and perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17), and one of God’s greatest gifts is the grace of being surrounded by people whose words bring light, encouragement, and peace. I am deeply grateful for each of you who took the time to celebrate this season of life with me. Growing older has taught me that aging is not merely about the passing of years, but about becoming more fully ourselves before God — walking in wisdom, purpose, creativity, and gratitude.

I designed the garment shown here through my fashion division, Jennylights Designz!, named in honor of my mother, Jenniese Lights, who first taught me how to sew and understand the language of fabric. In the spirit of the Met Gala’s acknowledgment of fashion as art, this piece is my homage to my Gullahgeechee Low Country roots and to my continuing meditation on self-expression, dignity, freedom and agency — themes I explored in *Black Dandies* in 2024.

The fabric is made from Spanish moss interwoven with threads resembling the hidden mycelial networks beneath the forests surrounding my neighborhood, while freshwater pearls honor the ocean that shapes the spirit and memory of the Low Country. Thank you for celebrating this journey with me. “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14) To God be the glory!!!

As a Black daughter of the deep South, I never much had a love or appreciation for May Day. I paid no attention to it while at Bryn Mawr, because I saw it as a celebration of white womanhood. Now that I am older, I've decided to make May Day my own. So, through Jennylights Designz, I created and am celebrating Gullahgeechee Girl's Low Country May Day. Today I prepare to honor the day in which I entered the world one bright sunny day in May.

Creating fabrics and designs make me smile in honor of my Mother, Jenniese Lights, who taught me how to sew and how to enjoy the beauty of textiles. The fabric in this digital painting gives expression to my struggle to have joy while adjusting to the disruptions of climate change in my native Low Country. The atmosphere shares its beauty in the descent of darkness, even as so much darkness blankets our world with pain. The antebellum home behind me represents the past. May the barbarities of that era never establish a stronghold on today.

Creating this digital painting gave me great joy. I hope it is a joyful experience for you as well. Today is not only May Day, it is also World Laughter Day. So let's laugh at the banality of evil and step lively into the future that includes us all!

When thinking about what to share for Earth Day, I thought about what kind of artwork would make the best illustration. But when I started looking through my art archives, I saw that I already had many photos and artworks that embodied the issues we should ponder on this day. I decided to share this photo I took while looking out from the window of our family homestead, in 2018. It was the bedroom where my dear Mother passed away in 2015. Snow is a rarity in the SC Low Country. I had never before even heard the words, "bomb cyclone." I had never seen this much snow, nor ever felt this cold - not in my hometown. But climate change is a reckoning that rearranges everything around us. Putting a halt to environmental apocalypse requires that we move past the shock and get busy making the kinds of changes that come with being a good steward of this planet.

🌿✨This photo reminds me that “Our Power, Our Planet” isn’t just a theme—it’s a calling. God has already given us what we need:Wisdom to change..Compassion to act.Faith to persevere. Let’s use our power to protect what He entrusted to us. 💚

Prayers for , this Holy Week.

Holy Week gives us a rich opportunity to reflect on Who God is and how He wants us to live in this world. Let’s face it: This world is a mess and it’s about to get a whole lot messier. Things are gonna get worse because we treat each other badly. We treat each other badly because we’ve forgotten who GOD is, and that He made us in His image (imago DEI).

The concept of "imago Dei" refers to the belief that humans are created in the image and likeness of God. This means that humans reflect the divine nature of God in their moral, spiritual, and intellectual capacities, which make them distinct from all other creatures. The imago Dei provides the basis for human dignity, rights, and our purpose to love God, others, and ourselves as expressions of the divine.

Today’s painting illustrates how modern societies exploit and abuse imago DEI. The man in the picture is a regular Black brother, who is being abused even though he is made in the image of God. There are large thorns protruding from a green plant wrapping itself around his head. This represents the scorn and injury inflicted upon him, even as Jesus was scorned and harmed, so long ago.

The crown of thorns from a green plant also symbolizes environmental racism, wherein a society uses environmental planning to systematically disadvantage and kill people of color. Concentrating toxic waste dumps, cell towers, and highways near Black neighborhoods is but one example of environmental racism.

This Holy Week, let us repent for how we have allowed our environment to be neglected and weaponized. Let’s do what we can, every day to help make our green resources beneficial to all.

Does Jesus care about such stuff? I think He does!

Remember:

Do to others as you would have them do to you.
(Luke 6: 31)

Think about it.
