September 30th is is a day for and honoring the who were forced into and suffered abuse, neglect, and the loss of their culture and identity. The day was created by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the trauma and intergenerational impacts of these schools and to promote truth, reconciliation, and a commitment to a future where “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt serves as a symbol of this forced assimilation and loss, inspired by the experience of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at a residential school.
